Interstate Windshield Crack

I have no idea how it happened but we have a four inch crack in our Interstate's windshield located near the top on the driver's side. Any collective words of advice as to which company would do the best repair or replacement? Also, any special considerations we should be aware of?

First, find out if your insurance covers the damage. If it does, they'll either tell you who to use, or tell you to pick your own company.

If they let you pick your own company, I've had good luck in the past with Safelite.

The main "special consideration" will be the fact that the windshield is so tall, above a sloping hood. If they can't access the crack by reaching from the side, the repairman may have a problem. The worst place is dead center near the top edge, as far as reaching the crack to repair it is concerned.

I have no experience having a crack repaired. If you get the windshield replaced I would visit a Sprinter authorized MB dealer and ask the service manager who they use for this work. Then I would visit the suggested shop and check them out. I have seen and heard about some terrible windshield replacements involving damage to the vehicle, sloppy application of sealant, leaks, damaged interior trim, etc. Chat with the shop manager and ask if they've replaced Sprinter windshields before. Try to verify that they have the right tools and skills to do the job properly. As Protag... pointed out, access to do the job right requires something more than a step stool.

Let us know how it goes.

The 2004-2007 Interstates had issues with the windshield gaskets not seating and thus not sealing properly and causing rust. Make sure you have your dealer on-board with your replacement. Use only OEM parts, windshield and gasket, and have them do a thorough inspection of the metal under the seal to check for corrosion. You'll get what you pay for with this issue.

If this was not from something hitting the windshield I'd try to get MB to cover it on warranty. These windshields are glued in and it is possible this was a manufacturing defect.

My thought......it happens.

We're on our third windshield, all the result of rocks hitting it.

Good luck,

Maggie

I've had good results with safelite with our cars, but if it's a heated windshield like our 2014 Interstate has then might the MB Sprinter dealership be the way to go, wondering myself?

Definitely check with MB....even if they don't handle Sprinter, they will get you to someone who'll meet factory specs.
