Family Asset - Airstream Interstate ...New Mexico exploration

We have a few different friends considering the purchase of a class B van. And I find myself reminding them “life is short and you aren’t going to live forever... so take the plunge, and get out there and explore the wilderness.”

Doing just that:

The past several days I’ve been exploring New Mexico from Santa Fe, & Taos north and northwest. I’m reminded of the terrific tool the Airstream Interstate is for my family again this Labor Day weekend (My wife stayed home to study for medical two school exams, so this trip was just me and the dog). Especially in our current C - 19 situation, I can’t think of a better way to get out and explore safely than a compact RV.

On this terrific trip, I didn’t come in contact with anyone… And the only civilization I needed was an occasional early morning diesel replenishment stop.

Packing home cooked meals, cocktail components and the right clothes for hiking in temps between 42 degrees - 88 degrees is “simple prep” for few getaway days exploring a new area.

I was rewarded by cooler temps at 11,300’ and plenty of Wildlife sightings like Big Horn sheep and spectacular Elk.

While traveling I often stayed overnight at small airports such as Taos. If you’re a pilot you already know about FBO’s and the safe secure parking available.

A couple places I visited were the Jamez Springs area, Los Alamos, and Valle Caldera which some might know is the location for filming the NETFLIX Longmire series.

Additionally - I enjoyed and encourage a visit to Wild Rivers BLM area for some gorgeous scenery and exceptional overnight camping at an outrageous sum of $10/night for up to 14 nights.

https://www.newmexico.org/listing/wi...rea-(blm)/462/

BLM have reduced the available camping spots by 60% ... which I understand especially in typically dense campgrounds. However the small spur campgrounds here are 4-8 sites (already dispersed beautifully) along the canyon rim. Yet, the “blanket site reduction” is in place anyway.

Hope you’re all making use of your family asset ... and keeping up with your own mental health needs. Trying times require a little adaptation, but the rewards are immeasurable.

Side Note:

No motorcycles on this trip, both my own XR and my son’s Triumph Tiger are in storage in Loreto Baja. Reasoning, “Because if Trump was going to close the border to the European’s we might never get out of Baja Mexico… And back into the US.”

But no problem… We would just fly down in April or May and complete our return Moto adventure after this crazy C-19 stuff was over... LOL, optimism way back on March 13, 2020.

Hope the images offer some information to New Mexico travelers and some “inspiration” to others.

I understand some of you remain parked and isolated during Covid-19, and I respect your choice. Hopefully you’ve got your road atlas out and are planning your next grand adventure.

I’m saying it’s like the fastest ASI we’ve ever owned .... 75mph speed limits and cruise will allow a setting of 85 ... of course the image didn’t post ... sorry folks some images aren’t sticking, and others are out of order (I give up!)

Hmmm, an airport is not a place Id thought about to overnite, but Ill think about it now.

Our Interstates are an exceptional way to travel, I fully agree.

Scott,
Thanks for your thoughtful and informative post. Im in 100% lockstep with you with getting out there and creating your own adventure; regardless of how brief, extensive, rigorous or lackadaisical it might be...the point is I suppose is to GET OUT THERE and make some memories baby!!!
That our plan; in late September were hitting the road from Cincinnati with intentions of visiting Zion, Bryce Canyon, Capital Reef, Canyonlands, Arches & Dead Horse Point and visit our daughter in Denver both coming & going...are we crazy???
Again, thanks for your post & Happy Trails!

Hi Maggie,

Our country has a robust (yet declining) airport system of 19,000+ airports, of which 5,000+ are open to the general public.

If you get a tap on the window, just let them know youre waiting for an incoming (private aircraft) flight. Or call the manager of one of these little airports and ask permission to park overnight.

TAOS, NM is a good example of a quiet, well lit, safe place to park overnight. Ive flown in several times to TAOS, Durango, Bend, and others. Not busy, and kind people abound.

Great reminder to get out there . . . thanks! Doggone nice photos including your traveling companion.

BTW is that cold snap going to affect you tonight? At higher elevations especially, plumbing could be at risk IMO. Maybe you are south enough to miss it . . .

Happy trails,

....
(1) At the micro-airports, boondocking requires the operator's permission (I've done it).

(2) Increasingly, even small airports are using automated bird scare equipment, including after dark when commercial or general aviation might not be active. This can result in quite the sleepless night (I've done it).

That might make for one unsettling wake-up call!

Micro Airport?

15-20 nights per year since 2014 ...

never encountered a problem from airport staff - and never heard bird-scare equipment activated

I overnight, vs stay for an extended time, and personally am really comfortable around a municipal airport.

YMMV -
