Well SD is 480i which is absolutely horrible because of the low resolution and the interlaced picture.

720p is the first level of what is called HD, then 1080p for Blu-ray resolution HD.

Directv uses mp4 compression on the new receivers and offers 1080p for most HD channels. However a lot of HD channels are 720p and almost all of Dish's HD is 720P.

You have asked a question on thread that has not been active for over 5 years. I think several members on this forum have the Direct TV dish on their Airstream Interstates.
