Angry Class B ignition problem

Just puchased a 2009 (2008 Sprinter) Class B, and after storing for 4 weeks, cannot use key in ignition. Keys check out ok from MB shop, but will not turn in ignition. New batteries. Any suggestions? LaVaughn

Welcome to the forum.

Wiggle the steering wheel back and forth while trying to turn the key.

Also make sure the gearshift is fully in "Park".

The keys have a chip in the fat end which sends a signal to the ignition switch. If it doesn't match, the van won't start. You should still be able to turn the key, though. If you can't turn the key, it isn't cut correctly. If it turns but won't start, the key needs to be reprogrammed. You probably have to go to a Mercedes dealer, with your VIN number off of the dash plate, and have one made. I say one because they will be $125 or more each.

Oh, nearly forgot… Since you say it's been in storage, look down by the accelerator pedal and make sure the chassis battery is connected. If the chassis battery is disconnected, the switch won't read the key's RFID chip and won't let you turn the key.

Same thing happens if the battery is connected but dead.

I know Sprinters, but not the intricacies of the Interstates, and so yield to Protag on this

It also will not start if the side sliding door is not fully closed. The side door can appear closed, but not be fully closed. Open it and shut it firmly, then try the key again.

I'm not sure about that one. Mine starts with the door not quite closed, but then gives me a red "Door Open" message on the dashboard display. Might be true for newer models, though.

Our 2014 will start with the side door open as well. It just complains about it.
