Carbon Monoxide Detector

All,

Were 1 month in to our '12 interstate. We recently had the carbon monoxide detector replaced by our San Diego Airstream dealer. I don't know if others have had this issue but now the defector (presumably new) is going off.. Does anyone have any tips on checking if we have a good/bad detector or if I actually have carbon monoxide in the van?

Thanks for your help!!

Presumably you were not using anything that produced CO prior to it going off? The water heater (on gas), furnace and the generator all exhaust to the driver's side, so when using any of them, you should keep windows on that side closed.

We had the same problem with our CO detector about 6 months in.... Tech at the dealer said this was not an uncommon issue with this wired detector. I opted to replace it with the battery-operated one (same Model detector and base, just not wired in variety). Problem solved. Except that for it to be done under warranty, I would have to simply replace it with another wired-in detector (that may have the same problem). Small price to pay for getting rid of a sporadic problem.

Another difference between model years for the Interstate. My 2012 came with a wired LPG detector, but a battery-operated smoke/CO detector. Since you have a 2013, that is probably the first model year to come with a wired CO detector.

Weird, but, in our 2013, the CO2 is battery operated only. When we had our beeping issue, I contacted AS in Jackson Center to clarify this, because upon removal of the detector, ours had wires that were dangling but not connected. Jackson Center told us that in our model they were battery operated only, and that the wired should not be connected to anything. They looked it up by VIN number to be sure.

I had the wired CO detector replaced under warranty in our 2013 model after about 9 months. If you check the owners manual for the detector there should be a test procedure to determine if sensor is bad. Both CO and smoke detector do fail. I even had one in our new townhouse go bad after 2 years of use. Manufacturer replaced it free of charge.

Most, if not all, smoke detectors need to be replaced after ten years due to the half-life of the radioactive element used in the sensor.

Can he do warranty work?

Appreciate the referral. Good to know about an alternative.

Weirdstuff---I do not know, they do not sell RVs or trailers, but they have serviced and repaired a lot of units others would or could not. Call and speak to Tom and say the Doc with an Interstate suggested you call. Forgot, he is one of the HONEST guys and does everything he can to help.

Just had our 2013 AI warranty work done at Jackson Center. One of the problems was the hard-wired CO detector that beeped even with a new battery. The fix was to replace it with the current-production battery-only CO detector. So far so good.

On a small almost unnoticeable label in the detector on my 2013 I found a warning that the 12V line must be disconnected before removing/changing the battery. No CO or Smoke detector problems since discovering that bit of information. Wish I had noticed it three detectors ago!

My CO detector started beeping yesterday for no apparent reason. 2 loud beeps every 30-40 seconds. The manual says it means something like "end of life". This is a wired detector.

I turned off the coach batteries and removed the 9v internal battery, but it's continuing to beep!
I haven't found a way to stop it since the labels on it discourage opening it up. Any ideas?

Carbon Monoxide Detector

You also have to remove the 12V wire to the detector - it should be accessible if you remove it from the ceiling.

That's interesting because when I turn off the house batteries, my CO detector no longer responds to the test button. Need to dig out the manual on it and see how it's set up.

Ah yes, I hadn't spotted that if you carefully pull out the wires that go up into the ceiling, there's a plastic connector. Silence at last! Thanks Boxster.

Incidentally, when I completely removed the detector, it continued to beep until I removed the battery.
Mine has 3 wires going to it, which look like chassis 12v, coach 12v and ground. I think I read somewhere they may now be using household-style battery-only versions.

One step forward, two steps back. My 2012 Interstate has a battery-only CO/smoke detector. Two AA batteries last about a year.

I erroneously said my CO detector when I really meant my propane detector in Post 17 above.
