Check received

We completed the emissions recall on 12 Oct and received a check for $3,515 yesterday (Monday). I was really surprised to receive it so soon. So it seems people should start receiving theirs as well.

I didn't do anything but it appears several others posted before me that they also received their checks as well.

Got the check today for the full $3590 - 5 1/2 months after submitting the paperwork and two days after getting the warranty letter. My wife and I are both listed on the title, with my name listed first. We each got a warranty letter, in separate envelopes. The check was in her name only.

Odd that some checks are missing the last $75.

I received the letter about the extended warranty as well however I haven't scheduled to have the work performed yet! I'm going to wait a few more months, by then the mechanics should be pretty good at it and it will also push my warranty out that much further.

6 months after having the AEM complete, and a few weeks after receiving the extended warranty notice and $3590 check I got a letter announcing that the AEM changed the maintenance interval from 10,000 to 20,000 miles. It then went on to say that we may have got the 20,000 mile maintenance reminder as part of a 2014 software update. This latter suggests that the 20,000 mile interval is not related to the AEM. I suspect the longer oil change interval is not related to any hardware or software change - just additional data or anecdotal information indicating that 10,000 mile oil changes are not needed. I suspect that having the engine lose oil control is far far down on the list of what will cause me to get rid of it. But I think I'll still keep changing oil every ~8000 miles.

20k oil change interval?

I just had my oil changed at 10k at the local MB dealer & I had the AEM done in April. On the dashboard, my next oil service due reminder says 20k. Before having the AEM done, my 2014 always stated an oil change was due at 15k. Looks like having the AEM done has also extended the parameters for an oil change to 20k! Like Titus, I’m not going 20k before getting the oil changed!

We went to Mercedes to have the service for emission modification applied. They are hesitant to do the work. The muffler will be replaced and they state it is tightly integrated with Airstream tanks and wiring under the van. They are weary of damaging the house section of the van. Anyone else running into this with their Mercedes service?

Yes - it is an issue because the tailpipe past the SCR pipe is added by Airstream. The Selective Catalytic Reduction (SCR) pipe is what you call the muffler.

https://www.dieselforum.org/about-cl...el/what-is-scr

When I had mine done the shop had no issue doing it - but they could not replace my heavily rusted tailpipe and heat shields. Since they are not Mercedes parts, they just could not get them. I ended up installing my own tailpipe.

Check out my thread on exhaust pipe repair after AEM installation:

The following comments apply to my 2012 Sprinter/2013 Interstate. Your configuration may differ. It is good that they are aware of potential interference issues and make sure they are not worsened, but that is no reason to not do the AEM. I had two cans (SCR catalyst and ammonia clean-up catalyst?) downstream of the DPF, and these two cans were replaced with one (a combined catalyst?). These lie along the centerline of the vehicle and are far from any Airstream plumbing. Closest Airstream part is the LPG tank but there that is far off to the side and protected by a heat shield.

The potential issue is with the Airstream-added tailpipe (Boxster's post above). Original Sprinter exhaust continued rearward. Because of the generator Airstream had to turn it sideways, to exit just ahead of the rear tires. My tailpipe was rusted and I would not have been surprised to have to replace it, but they were able to reuse it. This tailpipe is wrapped in two places to protect Airstream plumbing. The wrap looked too thin (~1/4") o do any real good, but it must be adequate. They need to be careful to reinstall the tailpipe in the exact same way to avoid lessening the clearance, but there is no reason that can't be done. They also need to make sure that it is centered in the U shaped cutout in the plastic skirting where exits the side of the vehicle. It is just a matter of making sure that all clearances are correct before tightening the clamps. Wouldn't hurt to make little jigs duct-taped to the tight clearance spaces before removal and use them as spacers during reinstallation. I'd thank and tip them for their concern.

Somebody reported being charged for removing Airstream plumbing when doing the AEM. That is not necessary, and they were ripped off.

I have noticed no significant changes to performance or fuel or DEF consumption post-AEM.

I had the rusted tailpipe issue as well. I took my 2013 AI Lounge to a local muffler shop. Had to find one with a pit, since Midas and other shops didn't have a lift that would accommodate the Sprinter van. My Mercedes shop advisor actually knew of a place in town with a pit. The work was only about $170 for the new tailpipe. I just had to make sure that they attached it with a clamp, and did not weld it to the SCR that Mercedes would later replace.

What did you use to insulate those sections of the pipe that were close to Airstreams PVC plumbing? I have < 1/2" clearance without insulation.

I received the full $3590 today. The prior owner must not have applied for his part.

Since we have since sold the Interstate and bought an ORV trailer, this brings our Airstreaming to a close.

Thanks to all who have shared their ideas and knowledge on this forum. I am now benefiting from the ORV forum.
