Black oil leaking from under my 2007 AI

I’m not sure where to post this, but I’m hoping that someone out there will be able to help. We noticed under our 2007 Airstream Interstate (22 mid-bath built on a 2006 Dodge Sprinter chasis) that there was a large (larger than a dinner plate) sized amount of very sticky black oil on our driveway. The van is winterized and still has oil in the engine. Above the black oil spill is a tank on the van that has a clearer sheen of oil on it, so something dripped down. We called our mechanic but we are not sure if this is an engine issue or an RV “house” issue. Just wondering if any one has some insight into what might be leaking. I’ll try to attach some photos. The leak is closer to the driver’s side about 1/3 of the way down the van from the front.

That's your fuel tank. Is your driveway asphalt? If so, the fuel will soften the asphalt and create a black sticky mess.

I am interested in hearing the outcome of this investigation.

In the OP’s first pic, that rectilinear feature visible in the foreground is the gray water tank’s protective shield, so the source appears like it could have an aft origin. However, if the rig is parked on a slope, it could possibly originate farther forward and run along the tank before dripping off.

My first suspicion was the rubber coupling that connects the fuel tank to the fill port, but that is all the way forward.

There’s also a smaller hose connecting to the tank, but I did not have a chance to investigate mine further to see where this goes (it’s difficult to inspect the top of the tank due to the tight spacing).

Thanks for this info! I am waiting for our mechanic to offer a diagnosis. I’ll post when I hear.

I finally got my van back from the repair shop. It turns out that the fuel pump gasket was causing the leak. According to the notes, they “lowered the fuel tank and inspected fuel is puddling up around the fuel pump collar a o ring. Removed fuel pump and replaced o ring that seal between pump and tank. Reinstalled tank” and all is good to go.

We are glad to be back up and running!
