Airstream Conversion Van?

Yesterday I saw a full size Ford van with
a large fiberglass box sticking up about 2 feet above the roof. It was labeled "AIRSTREAM 190". The van appeared to be of relatively recent vintage. Does anyone know the history of such a beast? The box had windows with curtains and the van appeared to be a conversion similar to a Roadtrek.

They are known as the Airstream B190. I don't know much about them but there is usually an article about them in the Blue Beret every month.

B-Vans

They're commonly known just as B-Vans. They've been around for years, although I don't know what the first year would have been for them... I know I've seen them back as far as '92.

I believe they're built on the E-250 chassis. They're actually done quite nicely. The PO of my 34' towed it with a B-van.

Airstream B Van

I own a 1996 B Van. I am interested in starting a site for fellow B Van'ers to exchange ideas and needs. I have owned mine since 1997 (I'm the second owner). I have towed a 34 foot Airstream from FL to MI and back with it and regularly tow a coffee concession trailer with it. I have lived in it too. I have a LOT of knowledge to share, and of course, I always need to learn more myself. Anyone interested please email me! Thanks!

There is a forum on the Airstream B Vans at

http://autos.groups.yahoo.com/group/Airstream190/

not very active but a good starting point.

B vans are very similar to the Falcons and produced by Airstream from about 1989 to 1999.

B190

Thanks for all the history.
Why didn't they make the exterior out
of nice shiny aluminum? This tendency
towards fiberglass is sad. Even AVION
made a truck camper with an aluminum outer shell.

I heard a rumor at the international rally that Airstream was replacing the B van with a new "Trans Van" type of vehicle. Any truth to this??

One of the Airstream 190's key features was that it had a standard van shell that helped with body integrity. This is one reason why it was just a fiberglass cap and an Airstream interior. It appears that it was based on the Falcon B Van design.

One idea for the B Van was a vehicle that could tow Airstream trailers. That idea appears to have been dropped as the latest ideas tends towards a class C type. This is a van chassis with a custom body. The rear axle to hitch point distance on a Class C gets to be rather long to support decent trailer towing. And even the AS 190 is rather heavy for a good tow vehicle.

The last I heard was that the latest attempt at a B Van replacement (I saw a picture somewhere but don't have a link) would have required something like a $120,000 price tag due to the shell manufacturing requirements. So that one didn't get much past the prototype stage.

It also appears that Ford is doing some things with its E series vans that may promote some interesting changes in the class B and C RV's

Uh, it probably would've been better to start a new thread with that instead of dragging up a 3-year-old one...
