2019 Mercedes Chassis

Anyone hear about when Airstream will be building on the newly introduced and redesigned 2019 Mercedes chassis?

They are always a year behind, right?

Just guessing here, but 2020/2021?

The article I read said Mercedes will start delivering the Sprinter to the US in 2018 ... just didn't say when

Depending on when Airstream got the drawings for the new chassis, it may be longer than that if they have to make significant changes to internal components (cabinets, plumbing, electrical, appliances, etc) as a result of internal changes to the chassis. ANY change to the mid-body will certainly raise havoc with upfitters because new CNC-routed walls/dividers will have to be created and test-fit, components may have to move like electrical panels/inverters if they've changed dimensions around the wheel wells, and the list goes on.

All that to say, don't hold your breath on a "1 year gap". For this first change over, it may be a bit longer....

I noticed this video on YouTube

Since I don't have a full understanding of the variations in wheelbase, engine, roofline, etc. I'm not sure how to interpret the information. I am puzzled by the comment late in the video that mentions the U.S./Canada will not be receiving the super-high top. I thought that's what the motorhome manufacturers used for Class B rigs. I've seen the lament regarding lack on super-high top discussed on other Class B forums. Am I missing something?

on edit: I can imagine Airstream has a stockpile of the 2018 models to get them through the transition from NCV3 to the next generation. However, I've heard the super-high tops are hard to come by even in 2018. The video above alludes to crash test compliance being the reason MB won't send the tall vans to the U.S./Canada

Someone surely will correct me if I'm wrong, but I thought MB had two high tops, the "normal" high top and a "super high top". RV upfitters typically build on the "normal" high top. The only one that I know of that has built on the super is AdvancedRV on the occasion where a customer has demanded more headroom (for really tall folks, like 6'6" and above).

I found some specifications that indicate the high top is 108" and the super high top is 120". Based on that it appears Airstream and most other Class B Sprinter motorhomes are made on the high top platform. So I guess all is well on that subject.

The next generation 2019 Sprinters are likely not going to be available in USA/Canada until the end of this year - 2018. I'd guess they might start showing up late in Interstate model year 2019 or in a 2020 model.

Regarding the super-high roof; it has been an on and off again option in our market. The Mercedes spokeswoman in the video above indicates the super-high roof will not be available in the 2019 Sprinters in USA. That's really not a big deal because the only B-vans I know of with the super-high roof were a few made by Advanced RV.

The big question in my mind is how will Airstream (and others) offer RV's based on the new chassis? As I understand it, they will be able to order them with gas or diesel engines. Will they give the consumer a choice, or will they only offer one or the other?

The new gas engine in 2019 Sprinters will be a small 4-cylinder that will not be great in a heavy B-van like the Interstates. Very few converters now even offer the option of the available 4-cylinder diesel. Most seem to just use the 3.0L V-6 diesel. But at least on the new 2019's the V-6 diesel will come with the much better 7-speed automatic.

And at 16:20 - lots of USB ports! The center dash tray with cover holds a wireless charger and several USB ports...

What I find interesting is they seem to have finally moved from passive safety systems to active ones. Active brake assist, active lane-keeping assist, dynamic cruise control.....nice steps in the right direction IMO.

I had missed those... but agree. Those are great aids. Anything that will help me stay alert and help out when I do not, are welcome additions...

7-speed transmission... those active safety features... all great things.

Electric sliding door has been available in Europe for several years, but not it USA. Hope it comes with new model as option.

Auto Cool makes an aftermarket kit to make the slider operate electrically. Kit is north of $2,500.

Not a problem. We have 2 minivans with power sliding doors & power rear liftgate (domestic Chrysler Town & Country and import Nissan Quest). Power sliding doors can be operated manually whether motor is well or completely dead. I know this firsthand due to failed motor on Nissan & wiring harness break on Chrysler. My MB S-class has power assist on all 4 doors & trunk. If any of the assist fails (and they FAIL because it has a stupid vacuum assist system) the doors & trunk still open or close just like a manual door. My point is any power assist system will eventually fail due to their MTBF being ridiculously under-engineered (my opinion only from many vehicles used with such option) but will not disable the doors from functioning. This is one option I wished was offered in our AI. I do have to say that I would not recommend this option for those who are not mechanically or electrically adventurous. They will probably fail DURING & AFTER warranty 😣
