2019 in review poll - how much time in your Interstate?

When I mentally added it all up, I was surprised to realize that I spent at least 3 months of 2019 living in our Interstate, for purposes too diverse to have even predicted at the outset of the year. And most of that was off-grid to boot.

I can remember back to 2014 when we first bought it, when my husband and I said to each other in newbie style, "Well, if we find ourselves not making much use of it, we'll just re-sell it."

How about the rest of y'all? What do your numbers look like?

This poll is for Interstate van owners please, not Airstream trailer owners. It's more challenging to live and function out of a small van, as opposed to a more spacious trailer with a TV to go with it. That's why I'm curious.

Someone will beat me on my number, for sure. We are not retired from our jobs, and so we are limited in the amount of traveling we can do.

HAPPY NEW YEAR!

We left home in Florida on 25 April. 17,622 miles later we returned home on 10 October. Our route, East coast to Maine, Wisconsin, Alaska, Oregon, Colorado, Texas home. The entire time was not spent in our Interstate, while in Alaska we took a flying detour to Europe for a two week Mediterranean cruise.

About a month and 3/4 to 2 months. Longest was a 16 day trip to a family reunion near ST. Louis. Most of the rest were 4-day Airstream rallies. A few 2-day stays at local state parks.

Expect to do more in 2020. Four 4-day rallies, Airstream International at Loveland, and Balloon Caravan to ABQ, and family reunion, plus the usual 2-day stays at local state parks.

What’s the inspiration? Moving up to something else?

65 nights in our van. 1st trip - 32 nights, 2nd trip - 24 nights, 3rd trip - 9 nights.

85 nights in our trailer. 1st trip - 12 nights, 2nd trip - 13 nights, 3rd trip - 13 nights, 4th trip - 22 nights, 5th trip - 25 nights.

I know your focus is the van but I was curious, since we have both modes of travel, how our excursions compared. 2019 travels show similar lengths of trips for the van compared to the trailer. For us the distinction is not about how much room we have when we travel but how much day-to-day travel we plan to do compared to staying in one place. For on-the-go sightseeing the van wins hands down. For staying a week or more in one place the trailer is the clear choice for us.

No, not moving up. We’ve seen just about everything we want to see in the US and Canada. Probably do some overseas travel.

We spent 24 nights in an April/May trip to the Southwest and California. Then 19 nights during an October/November trip to Southeast and the Smoky Mountains.

Total of 43 nights, roughly 1-1/2 months, in '2019. Close to the same as last year (our first year).

48 days in the van for trips to Florida, Minnesota, Virginia and Ohio. A little less than past years as I also spent 27 days traveling in Europe and Caribbean.

Looking to down-size into a smaller Sprinter next year as I don't need the large van.

107 days over 3 trips and a few overnighters in 2019. First trip of 2020 starts soon and includes Anza Borrego, Quartzite and other desert destinations. This will be our second trip with the Stowaway 2, affectionately know as Our Garage.

2018 - 8 months, mainly on the road - Oregon to Maine, then Kentucky, Texas, California and back.

2019 - 7.5 months, mainly parked, taking care of aging in-laws, which is now behind us.

We rented out our home nearly two years ago in order to retire early. When we are not living and traveling in the AI, we go stay at our home in Costa Rica, which may be six months each venue in 2020 if we continue to choose being "homeless".

I'm really liking life in the Interstate... we tell people it's perfect for one...

We put together a couple trips after picking our coach up in March of 2019, about 9,000 miles in 9 months. A trip out to South Dakota, Iowa and a hunting trip to Ohio this winter. Made a stop in Jackson Center as well. We have really enjoyed traveling in it, very comfortable.

I'm doing my year-end phone cleaning, and I found this. Seems like an a propos image for this thread, especially given that it's a T1N Sprinter in the background.

About 4 months total. Two months straight while our trailer was transported out to Colorado for updates and maintenance, then off and on for excursions.

Not as much this year for overnights (last year the ‘around the country 11k mile trip’ did take quite a few days).
But I use it most every week for day trips.

I’m not sure how many overnights, just using it a lot like I do makes it worth it.
I also hauled insulation, Sheetrock, plywood, tool benches and loads more when I need to haul something long. A piece of cardboard protects the seats and floor darn well.

We spend 3 to 4 months every year in our 2011 Interstate. We leave New Hampshire around New Year's, head south for the winter, returning in April. We often travel another 2-4 weeks in the fall, staying in our Interstate. We keep the bed permanently configured, with a cotton futon mattress on top - very comfortable. We also took out 2 of the seats, replacing them with more storage that we built ourselves. We love it.
