Question 2014.5 Battery replacement SPARKS

Hoping someone here could explain why I would get sparks when trying to change my batteries.

1. House Battery Disconnect - Off
2. Chassis Battery - Disconnected
3. Fuses - Removed all just in case
4. No power reading on inverter

Connected Negative/Black cable 1st (also tried reverse)
Sparked on Positive

A couple people said sparking is normal but is that true???? I am afraid to secure it since it sparked on touch.

Also posted about this on FB... https://www.facebook.com/703895368/v...8144498035369/

Make sure both negative cables are removed before you try to connect or disconnect positive. If there is no negative connection, it is impossible to get sparks from the positive. Basic electricity!

You can get sparks from the negative if there are things in the coach drawing power. Turn off the battery switch by the door before changing anything.

The solenoid added to the 2415s as an engineering change should isolate the batteries when the switch by the door is turned off. If the solenoid has not been added or if the solenoid contacts are fused, then you will could get some sparking.

Yes, everything appears to be turned off... that is why I am confused.

I don't know anything about the solenoid... I guess it is time for more googling

Where is the solenoid located? I don't have anything under the jump seats, just trays.

Also cover the solar panels with a blanket. I had the same experience when I changed my batteries and the solar was the cause.

A solar charger will certainly provide an immediate current sufficient for a spark so that is good advice to cover the panels if you want to avoid a spark. So can the computer controllers for the Chassis battery, no good remedy for that. If the batteries are not wet cells with serviceable caps and there is no strong fuel odor in the area, a small spark is of no concern.

If there Are any sparks then something is still connected down stream, Like the propane alarm. Solar as already said could cause it too. Just hook it up, unless you got sparks like a welder! then you got the wires crossed on the battery’s

If you haven't done so already, it's a good idea to install a big red switch between the solar panels and the solar controller, for just this kind of situation.

Still sparks when solar is covered but I do see that the generator panel has a reading. How is that disconnected?

Thank you everyone! I am up and running. Batteries are connected and new fuse on BIM. I will upgrade the BIM in the coming weeks but I am happy to be connected.

One thing that is a bit wonky is when everything was reconnected, the main battery switch by the door no longer worked. I am able to turn it on in the rear. However, when I turn it off the microwave display is still on.

The microwave display is 120 volts, not 12 volts. The door switch has no effect on it.

You need to disconnect the Sprinter battery using the connector located near the accelerator pedal. The Sprinter battery powers several items in the coach system via a wire on the battery isolator. When working on the 12V batteries always best to make sure they are all disconnected - including the Sprinter battery.

Sparks? When did Mercedes switch to Lucas electrics?

Just make sure you don't let the smoke out of the wires... but if you do, Lucas has more factory smoke for you to put back in.
