After watching everyone else at the campground with their well behaved pets, we realized that both of our dogs were comfortable as everyone around us were very calm and in control....bottom line, we heard very little barking.

When we arrived home of course Bailey went back to her normal barking at everything that moved, but also realized our neighbor's dogs are dysfunctional and that's why she barks at them all of the time.
Got'a LOVE them Weiner dogs....😘

She rides in the truck without a peep, and has her spot in the trailer. When outside, we have her on a lead tied to the picnic table and she never leaves the area in front of the trailer and never barks or bothers anyone. This takes work and trust between dog and owner.
Hanging out in the campsite with dogs is enjoyable, but I think if you are going to be out on excursions for extended periods, its best not to bring them.

I would like to hang out with a GSP for a few days. I really like the look of a wire hair pointer but I would never pick a dog based on that. I have a pointer mix myself. Great dog. So easy to train.

The GSP is the best dog I have ever owned. Great attitude, easy to train, and so very loving. I have trained other dog breeds for hunting, retrieving , etc. and they were great, but the GSP's intelligence truly amazes me.

We owe it to our best friends to give them what they need. As Peter said above, dogs have inherent characteristics which means they require certain lifestyles. Don't pick a dog by what it looks like or its size. And be careful about making sweeping assumptions about breeds. Not all individuals within the breed are the same. Doing your homework will give you the best shot at having a happy relationship with your dogs. And give your dogs the best shot at having a good life. There are no bad dogs.

We camp with our dog, a female Great Dane. She’s a great dog, and she seems very happy to come along on trips with us. She’s a smaller Great Dane at about 115 lbs. I had a custom dog bed made for her that fits into the Airstream hallway just right, and easily fits into the cab of my truck when towing.

We haven’t ever left her in the camper or the car at a campsite. We try to adjust our activities to include the dog. This generally works well, with the exception being dog limitations at some national parks. We typically walk or hike, and she comes with us. We would prefer to allow her to roam free around our campsite, but we keep her on a cable/leash as most campgrounds require it. I see many people violate this rule, but we don’t do that. Overall, our pup is a good camper!

It took Ruby a while to realize how great the view is out the front window. Scotties make great travel companions. They only bark when you want them to. They don’t need exercise multiple times throughout the day, though they can manage it when you do. Keep raccoons & other bothersome pets away. Large dog personality and toughness in a small package. Great with kids.

A quick visit to the pound and we will all realize there are a lot of bad dog owners. Training and exercise is so important.

Here is our cairn 13 and the new throw away covid dog. It is fun and challenging to introduce an adult dog to the world. Every experience is new. She had never been in water or mud or leaves. There were a lot of new experiences for her in year one. She was a ton of work to get up to speed but we are pretty much there. Really excited for year 2.

My kids had a baby that overwhelmed them and ended up giving me theiir 8-year-old, 8-pound, long-haired chihuahua. This is him at 10 at his favorite spot in the AS - on the bench seat watching me cook. He is a food hound extraordinaire. I have to watch his calories like a hawk.

Let's talk about dogs, traveling and security

What a cutie. Our four rescues are food hounds as well, but we have managed to teach them some manners, so they wait for their sample. Potato chips are a favorite. We carefully control their food rations to keep them healthy.

Our old lady Chihuahua mix rescue named Chocolate, lived about 21 years. She was the boss of the house. Lower right in the picture with the white face.

21 is a good run. There aren't many people that get to hang out with there dog for 2 decades. I don't know how so many great dane owners do deal with the frequent loss. I've only known 2 but they both slowed way down by 5 and were gone before 8.

Great Danes are fascinating dogs. They are truly gentle giants. This is my son’s dog, Titus. 150 pounds of lap dog that outweighed my daughter by a bunch at the time!

She fell asleep first, and he carefully sneaked onto the couch and into her lap. The sad bit is Titus is now very old and frail. They love their people a lot but sadly don’t last very long.

She was probably 9 years old when we got her from the local pound. She was a great cuddler and loved to ‘mother’ the other two white dogs. We think she was a backyard breeder mom. She was a great traveler and very active for a long time.

She had great hunting skills working with the Tibetan to chase and sometimes catch darn near anything. She finally developed kidney failure and other terminal issues and we had to let her go a couple years ago. She is still missed.

Ours have accidentally gotten loose on trips in unfamiliar territory. They always run straight back to their Aluminum doghouse wherever it is. They love to travel but feel very safe in the truck or Airstream.

My two love the great outdoors. They sleep on the drive and love the trailer. Here they are in their favorite pose. They are both dachshund 50% mixes. The big on on the left has the other 50% as beagle. The little one's 50% is Shih Tzo.

We travel with two Golden Retrievers, and have found that they suit our needs perfectly. While Goldens are of little use as a guard dog, they make good watchdogs. They wouldn't attack an intruder, but they have a deep robust bark that would make a thief think twice before breaking in.
That said, they rarely ever bark, are pretty calm traveling companions, and are well trained in terms of coming when called and heeding commands.
I can absolutely leave them off leash for extended periods of time, but I generally do not. I can be outside in our campsite, and have a pet owner walk by with a dog that goes ballistic at the sight of our dogs. This generally evokes a big yawn from my pair, as they seemingly respond "chill out little white doggy".
One thing my guys are bad about, is begging the neighbors for a handout when they smell outdoor cooking. Which is something nearly impossible to fully train out of a dog; which is why all dogs should be leashed. Begging dogs can be annoying.
