Just heartbroken

We had to put down our beloved 14 month old Cocker Fiona yesterday morning. She developed acute pancreatitis and related vasculitis that completely baffled the vets. She had gotten picky about her food about a month ago but had checked out fine at her annual checkup in mid August. They did X-rays and sonograms but couldn't find a cause. We put her in animal hospital on Saturday and by Sunday morning her albumin levels had plummeted and when we went to see her she was just so acknowledged. We are both just numb with sadness and questioning whether we or the vets missed something that could have made a difference. She was our companion who was supposed to grow old with us as we looked forward to retirement camping in the near future. It's just so hard not having her furry brown face and wagging tail greet me at the door when I come home from work.

I'm so sorry to hear this. These amazing creatures, so full of selfless, unconditional love, crawl so deep in our hearts, it's impossible not to be heart-broken when they leave us.

I hope happy memories help you through these tough days.

So sad to hear this. The heartache will be replaced by memories...in time. It's never easy.

Very, very sorry to hear this.

Losing a beloved dog is one of life's greatest sadnesses.

There is nothing on earth like a dog... they are such a blessing in our lives. We need to cherish every moment we have with them, for they are gone far too quickly.

Best wishes to you and hoping the sadness softens for you before too long.

Pancreatitis can hit like a freight train. I know two people who were just a bit under the weather one week and gone the next. Don't blame yourself or the vet for missing anything - a 14 year old dog is elderly and seeming to slow down would be normal.

I am sorry for you. It's almost as bad as losing a child, and people who haven't had pets often don't understand. Take your time, but know that somewhere in the future there is a new spirit waiting to chew your carpet and sit on your shoes rather than bring them to you.

Wishing you gentle memories, Paula

Our condolences for your loss, we can imagine the sadness you are going through. Our Australian Labradoodle is just 13 months and just the thought of being without her is painful.

I understand your pain and loss. They are with us such a short time, but give us their whole life. Every dog is my last, yet when the time is right they find us in the future. They all will meet you again at the "Rainbow Bridge". Take time and your are entitled to every emotion at this time.

Very saddened and sorry to hear of your loss. We too lost a dog we rescued and had for only a few years. It's one of the hardest and saddest things we have had to do is put her down. I volunteer at a rescue as a trainer and rehabilitation person, each day we have families come in with similar stories, some which happened several years ago, all eventually end in tears and despite the fact we do this every day we too end up tearing up. My wife and I where on vacation in our AS, she was with us and on a Saturday morning after she and I went on a run, three hours later we had to put her down, In Nova Scotia. We second guessed ourselves for a long time, where there signs we missed etc, there were, but unfortunately we have to do the best we can, thank God we had them and move on. I know it's early I realize you cannot stand the thought of her not being around, but from experience on both sides as an owner and a rescuer, I recommend you visit a local shelter or rescue in Dallas and look around. You will never replace her, your not trying to and you will NOT find a dog there for the two of you, a dog WILL find you. When rescuing a dog you never get the dog you want, you get the dog you need.

Again my wife and I send our sincere condolences, we lost our love two years ago and still think of her daily.

Bud

You have my deepest condolences. Dogs have a way of burrowing deep into our hearts, and they take part of our heart with them when they go.

So sorry to read your post about Fiona. Don't question these decisions, there is so little you can do about these things that cannot be changed. We lost one of our two long time companions last month and perhaps one comforting experience we have made is that things get better with time. Cherish the good times you had with her!

Thanks everyone for your kind, comforting words. We got sympathy cards from three of the vets who took care of Fiona today in the mail. A nice gesture even though it brought tears to our eyes all over again. Things are getting a little better day by day.

I feel about dogs the same way you do, and am so sorry for your loss. I've outlived 3 dogs so far, and it's a tossup who will outlive who with the 4th. Give it whatever time you need, and when you're ready, there will be another one. It will never take the place of the ones who have gone before, but it will make a new place in your life

Dana... may God Bless you and keep you, and Fiona, as well. Your loss is significant and we dog lovers here very well understand the significance of this.

This is a reminder for all of us with beloved pets to show them our love and appreciation everyday, to care for them as best we can, for sooner than we wish, they will be gone from us.

My prayer is that in time, you and Fiona will be reunited for all eternity, in ways we living humans cannot even begin to comprehend. The Creator does understand all of this. I pray for this for everyone who has lost beloved people and pets.

It is always difficult to loose a "best friend" who loved you unconditionally. Hopefully another "best friend" will be in your future, not as a replacement, but as another new and most likely different personality in your life.

Tis better to have loved and lost then to have never loved. All the best.
