Is there a breed of dog suited to an Airstream?

I have a 1983 AS 310 turbo diesel motorhome with a doghouse, really!

When we lost our Irish terriers the same year we bought the motorhome, we were cognizant of the fact that whatever breed of dog we bought was going to have to be Airstream friendly. We ended getting a Border Terrier; friendly, but not too friendly, inquisitive, full of fun, loves travelling, and very hardy.

We have found the Border to be the perfect size dog, not too big for the motorhome, but not small enough to get under foot, or worry about local wildlife running off with him.

What breed of dog did you go with, and did having an Airstream play a part in selecting the breed.

Cheers
Sidekick Tony

Airedale?

Actually, we have yellow Labs. They love camping as long as there is swimming and/or fetch involved.

We have two Chinese Imperials (very mall Shih-tzu) and they are perfect for travel.

We find that any breed small enough to fit through the door works for us. We have two shelter dogs. We're not sure what Luna is. Spitz Golden mix maybe. Bailey is a treeing walker coonhound.

Best dog to travel with?

Under 20#. Non shedding. Well trained. Only barks when sensing danger. Will protect you and your loved ones without hesitation. Doesn't beg at the dinner table. Bathes itself and cleans up any dog piles it leaves. Spayed female.

Moyen Poodle would be good. No shedding, about the right size.

What we got? A rescued Catahoula Leopard Dog. 65 pounds of camping, hair-shedding, hiking, running, pouncing, squirrel-chasing, whining-at-windows, cattle-herding, pig-hunting fun. Last two are official attributes of the breed, but we haven't tested him to see whether he actually has those skills. He's roughly 2.5 years old. We figure that in about 5 years, he'll be just right for us.

That is very close. The bathing and clean up is BS. You develop that perception when you travel with pups that have the other traits. One addition - rescues take a little while to get comfortable, but the emotional payback is quicker.

Warning - poodles are charter members of the raspberry gang. It's a world wide organization with deep tires to organized heart theft. Proceed at your own risk. Pat

Well, the picture below shows the second of the breed (Sloughi) we have spent a month each year with in our 19' Bambi. You love your dog? Then any breed or size is suited.

Is there a breed of dog suited to an Airstream?

4 male rescues. A Tibetan Terrier, 23 pounds, sort of blonde. Two Maltese/Poodle mixes (we think) literally rescued off the street a few years ago, about 12 pounds each, both white. A stunning black Pomeranian/Chihuahua mix at about 15 pounds. They all love to travel and are “lap magnets”

They don’t care where they go, as long as they are with their humans. They think the Airstream is just a big silver doghouse just for them.

This is Hagar doing a little back seat driving. From day one he took ownership of the Airstream and from that point on it became the "Hagarstream." He traveled with us from coast to coast and many happy miles. Sadly we lost Hagar to that RV Park in the heavens.

Before long we realized the need for a back seat driver so Rascal agreed to accept the position. His first long trip was to Alaska and he handled the position like an old pro.

The best dog is the one that jumps in your truck when the keys rattle.

First I would like to suggest going to your local shelter or Rescue group. We have had Maltese rescues for more than 25 years and they do great. All breeds will have to get used to any thing you drive, or sleep in. Good luck in finding the perfect pooch.

What breed dog

We have a French Bulldog. They don't need much activity and are very quiet so they don't disturb anyone at parks.

Preferably one that doesn't get car sick! We have a standard labradoodle. He's large but has adapted well to the AS. And we love him!
