Is there a breed of dog suited to an Airstream?

Okay, the truth is if you haven't already fallen in love with a pooch, the ideal one will not shed, weigh 50 pounds or less, loves people, is trained, is a rescue dog, and doesn't bark too much.
The 50 pounds I picked because they have to get in and out of the TV a lot, and lifting them is not so easy. Too small and they fall into that "toy dog" (sorry) category.
Do Border Collies shed a lot? They seem perfect!
Of course, Molly is my favorite, but she generates enough hair every day to make another dog soon. I've become an expert on vacuums. And at 74 pounds, she's a handful if she decides she doesn't want to get in the truck.

I don't know about short-haired ones, but long-haired border collies shed as much as any other long-haired dog. After not brushing Lupe for a few days, we can brush out enough hair to fill a gallon sized plastic bag. She is a good little traveling companion, though, as long as she can be the center of attention, which goes for pretty much everything else in her life. I think the border collies one hears about with behavior problems are ones that have been ignored or left alone too much, which they don't tolerate well. They are very active and need to be exercised several times a day; they will remind you if it is time for a walk. That is a good thing if you are getting older and need the extra nudge to get some exercise, but can be a little trying on a long trip with only enough time for a few potty breaks during the day.

Do tell about your vacuum preferences. With 3 dogs - AussieX, BoxerX, and Dane, we have lots of hair. Ok, I'll admit that I might contribute a bit too.

It's less the hair that get's us than the sand a dirt they track in. No # of mats/towels seem to take care of that!

We have used the Eureka Easy Clean hand vacuum (http://www.eureka.com/p/easy-clean-hand-vac-71b) for many years in our Airstream. Lots of suction and a rotating brush you can turn on and off independent of the suction. Works for us with dog hair (yes, Sloughis shed) and dirt.

Im a little prejudiced here but, Yellow Lab and/or Golden Retriever are it for us. We were getting ready to leave on a two week trip and couldn't find the Lab. Little did we know during the half hour search that she was already in the truck and ready to go. Sadly, we lost the Yellow about four years ago and the Golden a year and a half ago. We now have a two and a half year old Golden that learning the Airstream ropes.

Have to put in my vote for corgis. We have traveled with 1 or 2 on our trips and they are always up for anything. My wife says they are "portable" due to their size. Shed like crazy twice a year!

Unfortunately, we lost Van in January and are now without a dog for the first time in 33 years.

My condolences Digger, to you and your wife. Perhaps one day soon another dog will choose you both. Dogs know us better than we know ourselves and they will certainly see your loving, kind, and generous heart.

Maggie, is your dog a Kelpie too? He or she definitely appears to be a Kelpie; Kelpies originated in Australia. This is my Turbo <3 I waited over 50 years to have a dog because I wanted my dog to have the best life and that's how long it took for me to afford it, house with a backyard, healthcare, good dog food, and time. God blessed me rewarded my patience with thee most wonderful dog ever; Chris, (Morelach here), agrees, and he has had several dogs.

Turbo is very smart, training him was easy, he LOVES his people so much and considers it his lifework to be as close to us as possible, (as in laying ON our feet, walking beside or directly behind us and protecting us from EVERYTHING, EVERYONE, EVERY Animal, but especially every coyote and every Crow or Raven. Meaning he is almost always directly underfoot, causing us to trip and yes, periodically, i DO fall. When I fall Turbo is right there to kiss my owies and lay against me so I don't get up and fall again. He wants me to know how dangerous the world is and that I should not engage it again. He must think a lot, he talks all the time. Chris and I manage to understand a lot of it, but not all of it. Turbo finds this frustrating, he thinks we are stupid, he is using very simple puppy language after all. But still, he loves us greatly. We are blessed.

Turbo will hike for miles, he's pretty tired after 10 miles though he will keep going if you do. Turbo will sleep if I do, until his bladder becomes uncomfortably full, I have slept as long as 12 hours. He won't do this for Chris; he realizes Chris has an old body alarm set for early mornings and he uses that to his advantage. He will lay around the Airstream or house if we do, long as we walk him at least twice a day.

Lily is a Louisiana foundling, and a lab mix per the vets, PammieSue.

I don’t know what she is mixed with, but her feet are webbed, and the vets have been firm on the half-Lab.

She has a personality as you describe your Kelpie....her driving nature is to please, and she couldn’t be a sweeter, more lovable companion.

Aren’t we lucky to have such animals in our lives.

Still alive and vertical, although Airstreaming is a distant memory as we're in the midst of a historical ice storm; small ice pellets rained down for hours yesterday, and today, hours of freezing rain.........it'll take a week for my Mistress to thaw out.

I have a trip to Michigan in a month with Tavish (my Border Terrier) in tow; hopefully the weather will break and I can get somethings done.

We have been tent camping for years with our large mixed breed dogs in an REI Kingdom 6 tent. I think they will do just fine in our ‘67 Globetrotter. We have not made our first trip out in the AS yet with them, but they fit in there. It will be a lot more convenient than the tent. Here they are in the backseat of our jeep that is packed to the brim with camping gear. We are so excited to take our first trip in the AS in two weeks.
