One of our cats is very very good at finding hiding spots. On our first trip this one decided to work her way through the furnace intake and get comfy back with the duct work under our dining area seating. It was a 2 person job to get her out.
Since we weren't running the furnace we blocked the intake area with pillows right away. The next night she did it again. She removed the pillows and crawled back in.
When we got home we installed some 1/2" steel mesh to block her from getting back in.
The next few trips she took one look and new that she wasn't getting in there. After that she decided that she would hide in the exterior storage under our FBQ. It wasn't hard to get her out but we didn't really like her getting in there because who knows what she would find next. More 1/2" steel mesh has been installed to deter her.
We used some duct tape to make the edges safer but it got me to wondering if others have solved this same problem in a better way.
I think you have made a good start. The mesh will deter her, and putting tape on the edges is a good idea for everyone. Now, start thinking like a cat. Where else could she go? Remember that if she can get her head in, the rest of her can follow.

I don't want to jinx it but I THINK we're good...... for now ;-)
