Bob,
Pets, be they dogs, cats, birds or whatever are really neat when inherited from some one we care about. They bring a link to their former partner/caretaker which is always a bonus to those of us left behind with the obligation to care for them.
Donna and I love dogs and cats but due to our lifestyle it's been cats for us. They are cool, make great buddies and it's surprising how much of a dogs attributes they take on when living with a dog in the family as well.
Sadly when my Mom passed her cat virtually pined away for her and there was no saving him no matter what our family and the vet tried. Mom and "Charlie" had been together for a very long time and were virtually inseparable to the point where if Mom went somewhere the cat rode shotgun. If one of us kids were coming along we either rode with the cat standing on our lap looking out the windshield or we sat in the back seat. No matter what music was on the radio or tape, Mom and the cat would be singing together and I have to admit that as Mom aged and her voice sort of let her down we thought her cat held a tune better. They were a hoot singing Old Rugged Cross at the organ - it would appear that this was their favorite duet song. So when Mom was buried we got municipal agreement and Charlie was with her.
You are fortunate to have the little furball with you.
Take care,
Barry
