A danger to our dogs...

I know I posted here awhile ago about xylitol ( an artifical sweetener that is deadly for our dogs).

Recently I learned that veterinarians can no longer treat for heartworm. The only medication (Immiticide) that kills heartworms is no longer available and no one knows when it will come back on the market.

So PLEASE use heartworm preventative FAITHFULLY. Set the alarm on your phone once a month and make it a priority. Keep your dogs on it year round .....even in cold areas of the country.

Please pass this on to anyone you know with a dog!!!!

Hopefully it's just a spotty shortage. I work with rescue dogs and here in Texas we've gotten some supply. For mild cases, the vets were treating with heart guard (a larger dose) and prednisone. Other brands of preventative use different ingredients, so it had to be heart guard. Year round use of preventative is best.

Lily gets her pill on the 11th of each month, the 11th of October 2010 being the day we left Chico State Park with her and she became ours.

The vet in LA suggested the heartworm pill that includes the preventitive for critters that can be picked up in puddles, ponds, lakes, etc., and that is the one we have kept her on. For Lily, all things must be tasted.

We gotta take care of our babies.

Just bumping this for those that missed it! The mosquito's are out in record numbers! Please use the preventative faithfully, as far as I know Immiticide is still unavailable in much of the USA, at the least it's very difficult to get.

Thanks for reminding me. Our two little rat terriers get their heartworm medicine the first day of every month and we have not had any problems getting it. Mosquitoes have started up here and you never know what one of these dogs is going to get into especially my son's little food obsessed dog with diabetes. She's a handful when you don't keep a close eye on her but we love her so much we have to forgive her bad habits. Just gave them their heartworm medicine right now!

Another nasty thing out there is kennel cough!

Our sweet Lily, who goes to doggie day care once a week when we are home, came down with a form of this on Monday. We had been forewarned last week by the day care.

When we took her to the vet on Tuesday, he diagnosed tracheobronchitis and put her on an antibiotic. She was the 6th dog they had seen that day with it. Poor baby, hacking her tonsils out.

She was markedly improved after 24 hours on the meds, only an occasional cough at this time.
