Wiring Harness 1972 Sovereign 31' short

I have a 1972 31' Sovereign and tow it with a 2500 Silverado. lately when I've been towing the 31 and my display dings and tells me to "check trailer wiring". I had a buddy come by and he tested the harness coming out of the trailer and he said that there was voltage coming out of the harness when it's disconnected from the truck. My buddy said we should replace the harness because there is a short somewhere. Any idea where that voltage would be coming from and how to fix it.
thank you!
