What Vehicle works for Pulling a 25 Foot RV?

I've always had mid sized (Ford Explorer, Mazda Tribute) or small (VW, Toyota) vehicles. -- I'll need a truck or a SUV to pull an RV, as the current Tribute has a weight limit of 3500, and i want to pull something bigger. What is a good vehicle for pulling a 25 foot RV? I'll probably look fror an older model in the $6,000-$10,000 price range used.

I would look at 2009 and older Toyota Tacoma or 4runners. Full framed and reliable.

Gen 2 Tacoma (2005-2008)

Gen 2 trucks come with two engine options.

The 2.7L I4 (Standard in all regular and access-cab trucks regardless of drive train, not available in the X-runner or double cab trucks)
159 hp @ 5,200 rpm
180 lb.-ft. @ 3,800 rpm
Max. Towing capacity 3,500 lbs.
Max. Tongue weight 350 lbs.

The 4.0L V6 (Standard on the X-runner, and double cab trucks, and available in Pre-runner and 4x4 Access-cab trucks)
236 hp @ 5,200 rpm
266 lb.-ft. @ 4,000 rpm
Max. Towing capacity 6,500 lbs. (*except X-runner 3,500 lbs.)
Max. Tongue weight 650 lbs. (*except X-runner 350 lbs.)

The Gen 2 trucks are available with a factory “towing package” on V6 models only.

This “towing package” consists of a class IV receiver hitch, supplemental engine oil cooler, transmission cooler (again automatic transmission only), Heavy-Duty battery, 130 amp alternator, fully functional 7-way round plug, and a plug and play brake controller pigtail.
The 2017 model goes up to 6800# with the v-6.

My first thought is any 1/2 ton pick up and it's suv counterpart.
When you say 25' RV that covers a wide range.
I have a 91 25' Excella and a 1/2 ton Toyota Tundra w/4.6 V8 and it is certainly not overkill.

I have a 25ft AS. I don't think I would want it behind a Tacoma or 4Runner.....I pull my AS with a half ton pickup.

oh crap... here we go.

While I've not spent much time in the great state of Arkansas, I'll be it's a truck state (not as much as Texas, but I digress). For that price range I'd look for a ford or ram 1/2 or 3/4 ton. The chances of getting a good tundra (sorry, owned 3 tacoma trucks and wouldn't tow something that size with one... the brakes are what it boiled down to for me) for that price range are slim to none.

More times than not, stopping is the issue.

My opinion on these matters is thus:
- if you are full timing, get a bigger than you need truck
- part time, maybe a couple/few weeks a year... 1/2 ton will do it. truck or suv.
- will maybe take it out a couple weekends every now and then... rent a truck for the weekend.

full disclosure: I tow my 12' casita with an F650 superduty powerstroke cummins briggs and stratton...

seriously though... 5.7L Tundra tows everything I own and then some... and it starts everytime!

Yeah, four wheel disc brakes would be nice....I have yet to own a TV with them, though.

My old Durango pooped out- too much wrong to continue fixing it.

So I had the same requirement- wanted an older SUV Tow Vehicle in the $6-$10k range that was nice enough looking to pay the repair bills if anything major needed repairs.

I thought I had narrowed it down to a Trailblazer/Envoy. Saw a lot of nice ones on the road; but not for sale. I ruled out a Ford Explorer because all the older ones here in Michigan were badly rusted out.

Then i chanced into a 2004 Escalade in really nice shape for $8k with 120k miles on it. 6.0 V8 with the towing package and air suspension. It is kind of overkill in the tow rating department at 8500lbs; when my 22' Argosy only weighs 3200lbs dry. We really love it and we know we wont be stressing it in any way towing our trailer.

Just told my story to let you know I think your price range is realistic, just keep looking.

Trade up to a Peterbuilt. Hopefully with a sufficient hitch!

By the way, in areas where rust is an issue you can have an older truck shipped from Arizona or Texas for around $1000. I've done this twice with great results!

I currently have a 25 foot AS Classic. I pull it with a Silverado 2500HD. I would recommend that you get a Ford F250 or the Chevy 2500. With this size truck you should have no problems. I appreciate the 2500HD because I usually go out West to the Rockies every other year and those "hills" need power to go up. On flat ground, the truck does not even seem to know that the AS is behind it.

I towed our 1999 25 Excella with a v8 4Runner and would not recommend that. Upgraded to a 2007 Tundra and it tow's like a dream. I think your going to have to set your budget higher. Any make half ton truck in decent shape is going to be way more than $10000

I pull my1977 25' AS with a 2013 F-150 4X2 Supercab Ecoboost 3.5L V6 that I ordered from the factory with tow package and it works great. Get 12 mpg with no wind. I'm out there once a month every month most of the time in Texas. I know its hot out there this time of year but mornings & evenings are cool. Headed for South Texas this Friday.

I pull an '86 Sovereign 25 ft. with a 2001 Chevy 2500HD extended cab 8.1 liter engine and Allison 5 speed auto transmission. The first few years of this model has been plagued with rust in the lower panels under the doors. Later years had a 6 speed Allison which is nice. There are times I have considered going to an '07 or '08 Duramax diesel but the 8.1 has been great. A counterpart would be one with a 6 liter engine with 4.10 rear end ratio. These engines love to rev but you don't have the Allison transmission which is a better transmission than the 4 speed mated to the 6.0.

We moved up from the Tahoe to a Ford F250 Super Duty four door. The Tahoe wheel base does come into play here and it is not as long as the truck and it does make a difference. If you can't do a truck, get a Suburban. 3/4 ton and longer wheel base of the Suburban should help a lot.
