And this "the Taureg was in 4x4 low range while the Duramax was in 2WD high range" is why the video is dumb.
Put them BOTH in 4 low and see what happens.

Having towed with a V8 Touareg and a V10 turbo diesel Touareg, I can assure you that it is a very capable vehicle for towing and stopping. The V10 diesel adds 500lbs to the front axle weight and it weighs more than my current F150 ecoboost. It also handles better, has better torque and larger 4 wheel disc brakes. If you have never driven one, then you wouldn't understand.
However the shortcomings are that repairs are expensive and required an extended warranty. Also, the storage space for gear is much smaller than a pickup bed. These videos prove nothing, but are entertaining. Especially the video of a V10 towing a Boeing 747.

Nobody's doubting the Touareg's capability. This is just a demonstration of:
Don't believe what you hear:
Don't believe much of what you read on the internet;
And, even if you see it; don't believe it until you know what the presenter is really showing.
That goes for "professional" you tubes as well.

This type of bumper to bumper pull test is fairly common with tractors on youtube.
Usually it's a smaller tractor that is fully ballasted and has good rubber against a larger tractor with no ballast and poor tires. It's all rather silly if you ask me.
Put about 2 tons of weight in that empty Chevy so it has some traction and try it again.
On the other hand, why risk blowing out a driveline on either vehicle on such a desultory test.

Reminds me of my beer drinking past (1970s) I challenge my neighbor my 7 HP Wisconsin powered Beaver garden tractor can out pull his big Craftsman with a front end loader and all the bells and whistles. I won. Next thing my 1974 F150 is changed to his half-ton chevy. Ended nobody wins but for years there are ruts in the asphalt in front of my house. Sal

The obvious takeaway here is that AWD is a must for safe towing.
Brevi tempore!
