Red face Thanks for the PDF

Hi,

Thanks for the PDF on the 66-81 umbilical wiring diagram. Just checking -- this should go for the 68 Trade Wind 24 ft. Land Yacht.

I just had to pay some good money I could have used for POR-15 because I connected something wrong from my new/vintage 68 Trade Wind to my Jeep's towing package outlet. I blew some fuses, kicked on the check engine light. I think I will leave the AS in the driveway while I rewire the umbilical.

I have the AS plugged into the house at the moment, but I don't know how long that will last because I see in another forum that I should be suspicious of the Univolt's monitoring of the battery charger while leaving the AS connected long-term.

I saw all the back-and-forth about the Univolt, so I don't want to stir up those hornets. My first simple question is, where is the Univolt supposed to be on the 68 Trade Wind, 24 ft, twin model?

Second question, maybe not so simple is, how do I change the Jeep's receiver for the 7-way plug to match the AS 7-way so's I don't make the same mistake again, and throw good money after bad?

Thanks,

Responding to your second question first, many of us prefer to rewire the Airstream to match the current Industry Standard for the Bargman plug rather than rewiring the tow vehicle. There are two reasons for doing so. The first is that it will simplify towing other trailers that you may want to two along the line as nearly everything today is wired to the industry standard. The second reason is that in an emergency situation, it will be much easier to find someone equipped to tow the coach if it has the Bargman wired to the industry standard rather than to the Airstream unique pattern.

I am not certain where the Univolt is located in the post-1965 coaches, but in the earlier 1964-1965 it was typically in the streetside corner of the one-stop service center.

Good luck with your Bargman connector wiring!

Kevin

Hi, Kevin, your response is very helpful. Of course, I would try the opposite first...

I suppose I could re-fit the adapter to correspond to the standard. The first post in this thread has the diagram of my year's connector, so I just need to be sure I can adapt the business end of the AS wiring to the standard, right? Better yet, I think I will just take the whole thing to an expert to be sure it's safely connected. I have to accept that I cannot do some things by myself, especially electrical work and welding. I do pretty well at repairs, but a retro-fit is scary.

Thanks,
Anne

to paraphrase Eastwood's rule: "A person's got to know their limitations."

Often a mistake in electrical wiring becomes welding!

This site is excellent for making the update to bring the vintage AS connection to industry standard:

Two Quick Questions:

1. The above diagram in Post #1 of this thread refers to the pin-out based on facing the male connector mounted on trailer, correct?

2. It does not refer to the female connector on the cable that plugs into the trailer, correct?

I'm having trailer electrical issues and just want to start from a known good state.

Umbilical "special" connection

Hi,
I have a 1969 Sovereign that I rent as a "static" guesthouse ..no towing. I would like to put a switch outside to light up the taillights and clearance lights at night for the guests, anyone have any ideas?? Maybe take the 12 volt juice from the electrical jack and shove it in the connector somewhere?
Thanks,
Mike

Tail Lights & Clearance Lights

These lights are powered from the "Tow" vehicle. Based on past comments in the Forums Airstream has used various versions of the 7 pin connector. But be as that may be you should be able, with some clip leads/probes, determine which pins on the plug feed those lights. (use a source of 12 volt power)

Once you have made this determination mount a waterproof connector box where the trailer plug can be stored inside. Then mount your waterproof switch and connect wires to the predetermined connectors.

On my 2003 Classic the wiring for the lights, at the plug view, shows the lights feeding in on the 1st pin to the right of the alignment pin. The gnd is 3rd pin cw from there. This may be different from your unit

Thumbs up

Thanks for the infos!
I found the pin that connects to the clearance and taillights! All I need is to get the 12 volts from the jack and a switch......looks cool in the dark!

Mike,
You don't need to tap into the jack wiring, you can get the 12V from the trailer umbilical. In this diagram you can jump position 3 & 4 and your tail and marker lights will light. Some folks here have made nifty switch boxes to accomplish what you are trying to do. If I can find the thread I will post the link.

Mike,
Here is the thread to "keeping your running lights on." You can see all the inventive ways people have accomplished this. I especially like robertsunrus' gadget.
