Trouble with Range Rover towing connections

I changed our tow vehicle to a new Range Rover Sport recently. On our first trip, the batteries in our Airstream went dead on the first night--boondocking. Upon arriving at our destination for the second night, the batteries hadn't charged at all during the 5 hour drive. Long and short--there was no 12v being transmitted from the tow vehicle through the wiring harness to the trailer.

I took the car to the dealer when we returned; they found that the 15A fuse through which power was supplied to the trailer had blown; they replaced it; and they said it tested fine at that time. To check, the next day I hooked up the RR to the trailer and there still seemed to be no power going to the trailer (based on the battery readout in the trailer). I then purchased a tester and found I was right--there was no 12v power coming from the 7-pin connector. All the other circuits worked fine--turn signals, brake, brake lights, etc. When I called and talked to Airstream, they said that the trailer can't cause that circuit to overload, that the trailer only accepts whatever power is being supplied to it through that particular 12v connector pin.

I'm stumped at this point and am wondering if the dealer might have installed the Tekonsha brake controller incorrectly and somehow has messed up the wiring causing that particular circuit to overload. Right now the wiring harness plugs in correctly, everything works except there's no 12v being supplied to the trailer. Anyone have similar issues--or thoughts?

From what I've read these newer European vehicles (euro 6) need some special electronics to charge batteries. Go to Sterling Power's website and take a look at some of their videos and they explain it. They also have products that get around it.

I believe Airstream told you wrong. The charge line comes in and goes to a circuit breaker panel with Type 2 12VDC breakers. The diagram doesn't identify the rating, but the smallest circuit breaker listed in the spare parts list is 20A. I suspect the fuse in your Rover is blowing to protect the breaker in the trailer, lol. There is nothing I see on the diagram to limit the current. The other side of the breaker goes to the 12VDC positive buss which is connected to the batteries directly. If the batteries are severely discharged they will likely draw more than 15A. Charge them up from shore power and try it again. It is possible there is a wiring error in your trailer (shocking, I know), but I'm guessing it is just the discharged batteries causing the problem.

That’s a good thought. I think the batteries were fully charged when I took our first trip but I know they weren’t when I checked it out this last time. I’ll look into that. Thanks for the suggestion.

A suggestion: put a 12 volt to 12 volt dc converter on the trailer and wire a dedicated circuit to it on the Land Rover. Like people sometimes do for a bass boat.

Just as a guess your batteries are drawing too much for the Land Rover circuit. But even if the fuse holds the TV is unlikely to actually put much charge on the trailer battery. My Dodge truck certainly does not. Basically once the TV battery reaches full charge (which generally does not take long) the system does not charge much from there. You get a high surge when the starting battery is depleted and then not much after that.

My landvrover tow vehicle

I tow with my LR4 and had an issue with it not charging the batteries on a long haul trip. Turns out the 7 pin just need d to be cleaned and greased.

'08 RRS Same Issue

I installed the aftermarket wiring harness from British Atlantic and have always had the same issue. All the connections (signals, brakes, etc.) work except for the charge pin. I know the fault lies with the RRS as the connection works when towing with my QX80. A friend said his Chevy required a fuse be installed before the 7-pin received +12V power. I have been searching to see if RR requires the same.
