Toyota Tundra 4.6L

looking to make our first Airstream purchase (the 25 foot Flying Cloud) Our tow vehicle for the moment would be a 2011 tundra with the small 4.6L V8. does anyone have any experience with this combination. worried that we might be a little underpowered.

Thanks for any and all responses.

There are a few subjects that can really get folks riled up. This subject is probably top of the list.
I have a 23fb that I pull with the Sequoia and the same engine. So I have a different suspension and probably a heavier vehicle, but it Works fine for us. People often say 'they can't even tell they are pulling anything'. I can tell I'm pulling 5000lbs, and I have to drive slower especially on hills but I'm ok with that experience.

Yes, you can tow your 25 footer with your Tundra, but you will have to be the judge of how well it does it. Basically, the faster you want to tow, or the taller the mountains you want to travel over, the more power you will want.

Good luck with your Airstreaming, and welcome to the forums.

Congratulations and welcome to the forum. The 23 FB is the lowest weight dual excel A/S with lowest tong weight. For 25 footer you may need a bigger engine even though your existing tow vehicle may adequate. There are lots of expertise regarding the tow vehicle in the forum and youwill also find multiple threads addressing this topic.
Good luck.

That engine is still 300 horsepower, right?
That should be plenty.

Used to tow same size trailers with a 200HP 350 Chevrolet back in the day, and thought it did good.

You will be fine, but may desire more power. I've never had too much power.

We towed our 25' with a 2006 Tundra 4.7 cross-country. The engine was capable but had to shift down and keep rpm's up of climbing and descending hills.

We never used overdrive when towing, always shifted down a gear (maybe more) to keep the transmission from hunting for the right gear when in hilly country. Before descending long steep grades lower speed way down and shift down before starting down.

For perhaps 95% of towing needs in a cross-country trip the engine kept vehicle speed, was quiet and smooth. If you can't live with engine revs and using your transmission during the other 5% you are a little underpowered.

The new 4.6 has 310 hp and 327 lb ft of torque.
Should pull any Airstream.

Same opinion as the others and that is you will be fine for normal driving particularly on the East coast where most of the terrain is flat.

I have a 1986 25' Sovereign and tow it with a 2010 Tundra 4.6 v8. No complaints here. The subject of tow vehicles brings out a lot of opinions. Some folks aren't happy with anything less than 3/4 ton truck performance—and that's fine, if that's what you like—but it isn't a necessity. I have to drive my truck to work everyday and appreciate the savings in gas mileage over the course of a year—and still don't feel like I'm giving up much when towing the AS. My advice is to try it and see what you think. Also, read everything you can find about towing from the folks at Can-Am RV in Canada. It might change your opinion about what's really necessary in tow vehicles.

Just wanted to let everybody know that we picked up the new home from colonial airstream in New Jersey and drove it home to Maine. The truck had no issues. Granted, this is not the rocky mts, but we are headed to the white mts of New Hampshire next week and am doing so with a much easier frame of mind. Thanks for the feedback.
