towing caravel 20

We recently got back from a trip with our new trailer. (Yay!)

I’m towing a 2022 Carvel 20 with a 2018 Jeep Grand Cherokee v8. The numbers seem to work out and I realize other people tow this size with a GC but I’m wondering about upgrading the tow vehicle for more confidence. Would a 1/2 ton truck be all that different?

My previous towing experience was a 1965 trade wind 24 and a 2014 Cayenne S. That really felt different than the current combo- obviously, a lighter trailer and maybe the air suspension made a difference?

If an extra 300-400 lbs. of payload makes a difference go for the 1500 PU, will help on hills too. Get a lockable tonneau cover too.

We have a FC 20FB, I have a 1500 Sierra, I think they pair well. I find the pickup useful as my daily driver (trips to Lowes, moving the kid into the dorm, etc.), but handles towing chores really well. I also like the way you can install TPMS into the camper wheels and check the temperature/pressure of the tires while rolling down the road, tap the camera button to zoom in on the hitch when backing up, just lots of little things about a truck that are handy when camping (can bring along an extra chair or two if needed, or a solo stove, store a dirty campsite rug so you can get it home and clean it up, etc.).

We do use a BlueOx Swaypro. It works well for us. Other people like their EAZ, or a Equalizer, etc.; I've never used any of them, but they each have their supporters.

Here are my two thoughts:

1. Many vehicles are technically capable of towing your trailer when you consider the important limits such as payload rating, hitch rating, axle ratings, GCVR, etc. That said, they all offer advantages and disadvantages. What do you seek in terms of improved confidence? More stability? More power? Better braking? More load carrying capability? The answer is important because a 1/2 ton truck may or may not achieve your goals compared to your Grand Cherokee.

2. The term “1/2 ton truck” covers a class of vehicles with a huge range of capabilities. Some heavily-optioned 1/2 ton trucks likely have less payload capacity than your Grand Cherokee. If you decide to pursue a 1/2 ton, then be mindful of the capabilities of that specific truck.

And now to the opinion portion of my answer:

I tow a 23FB with a GMC Denali 1/2 ton truck and it’s a great combination. My setup is well within the towing and payload limits and it performs beautifully, including towing in the Rocky Mountains. Aside from the added utility offered by a truck, I believe that you’ll find that the longer wheelbase and increased weight of the 1/2 ton truck compared to your Grand Cherokee will provide a very stable and solid feeling when towing your Airstream. Towing options like an integrated brake controller and towing mirrors add to the experience.

Good luck with your research and your decision.
