Tow vehicle question

First time user:
Will be purchasing 28FC RB. And wondering if 2019 F150 King Ranch 6 cyl ECO is adequate? Or should I consider a 250? Thanks

IMHO you should consider a 250.

There are multiple threads on this subject. You can peruse them as you wish. My personal experience is that a 150 will work but a 250 will work better.

I think you will find that the King Ranch trim will have a pitiful payload. You might stop at the Ford dealer of your choice and look at one. Go by what the yellow sticker on the driver's door post says, now what the brochure or salesman tells you.

The 150 with the 3.5 liter Ecoboost will tow any Airstream ever made. But, in most trim levels will have a fairly low payload (esp. KR). Drop a thousand pounds of hitch weight on the ball and you may not have any carrying capacity left even with your weight distribution moving some of it back to the trailer axles...

As stated, you may be on the ragged edge of payload capacity with the KR trim line, but the 3.5 eco will pull the weight well. I pull a FC27 with a Lariat 3.5, and am comfortable with what I haul, but I also know I'm pushing the margins a bit. Check the yellow sticker.

I pull a 28FC RB with a F250 Lariat diesel. On the pulling side, engine does not have to work hard at all. 12.4 mpg towing at 60-65 mph. On the weight side, I put whatever we need in bed with no concern of overload. However, IMO, the most amazing piece of the combo is the braking ability, both in the brake size and the engine braking in tow mode. Can hold speed on long downhill grades without riding the brakes. In no way am I knocking the 150's. I had two before the 250 and pulled box trailers and boats with no problems, but they were lighter. As already stated, both will work. A consideration may be how much will you be towing, type of terrain, how many passengers and gear, and so on. You picked a great AS.

An F-150 will tow a FC 28 but you will have to watch your loading and use a weight distribution hitch. I would strongly recommend a 3/4 ton pickup instead. Few people who have made the choice of the larger truck will tell you they regret it.

Any half ton truck will be a marginal tow vehicle for a 28 foot Airstream. The pulling power could be sufficient, but the load capacity will be marginal at best.

Short answer is I agree with all above posters. I have a heavily optioned half ton like the King Ranch and you really have to watch what you load. And we have a 25’ Airstream not a 28’.

You are smart to ask the question. Get a three quarter with more payload (check the door sticker) and never wonder about your safety. But check that sticker as some three quarter ton trucks can have low payload capacity too!

Enjoy!

You will not regret getting an F250 diesel. Pulls my Serenity 28 so easily. My previous 2016 Expedition EcoBoost had sufficient power, but lacked payload. Night and day difference with the diesel !
