Scale weight question

I need to get a weight measurement on my pickup truck tow vehicle. When I called a local CAT scale... the guy on the phone acted like I had 3 heads.
Was I just talking to the wrong guy, or do some CAT scales just do big rig
comercial truckers?

You can weigh your pick up there. If you download the app, you can get weighed right from your truck and never go into the truck stop to pay. I believe the fee is $12, if you go back with your trailer within 24 hours, the re weigh is only $2.50. Also you be asked by the app or the attendent for a trailer number. I just make one up, like 1234.

When you pull on the scale, there is one pad for your front axle, one for your rear and one for your trailer axles.

Good luck Click image for larger version

All the CAT scales will weigh anything that rolls up, but they don't get a lot of trailers. the one down the road from where I live gets a lot of military transfers due to the many bases in my area and you have to have a certified weight ticket to enter the base so they see some to the point that each time I pulled in, they asked if I was in the Military.

Anyway since they don't see a lot of travel trailers, it would help if you get familiar with the procedure. What they generally prefer is this:

1) Pull onto the scale with WD hooked up. Get your front axle on the front scale, your rear on the middle scale and the trailer on the back scale. The yellow paint lines clearly mark them.
2) Use the call button to talk to the operator, provide requested information, tell them this is your first weighing today, and give them a truck number when they ask. Just make one up, like the last four of your social or phone, they need to punch something in.
3) Run into the counter to pay and tell the operator you are going to do two more weighings after the first one. Pay the full amount ($15 or so for all three) They will hand you the first ticket,
4) Go back to the rig drive off, release WD tension and drive back on, ring the operator tell them it is the second weighing and provide the weighing number from the ticket. when finished, drive off.
5) disconnect the trailer in the truck parking area and return to the scale with just the vehicle on the front and middle scale. Ring the operator, repeat and when finished drive off.
6) Collect the two other tickets, re-hitch the trailer, you are good to go.

edit: yeah also what he said ^

The first time I used a CAT scale I pulled in right behind a Subaru sedan.

Welcome Aboard 👍

I use a "four" ticket method. I add a full WD run so I know the maximum limit of the WD set-up.
I have my Hensley jacks marked and with a bit of experience one CAT trip per Season is all thats needed.

The more you learn about YOUR rig the easier it gets.👍

If you are just wanting to know your vehicle's weight and don't need it "certified," any landscaping place that sells large quantities of gravel, rock, etc. will have a scale. I have found that they'll often weigh your vehicle for no charge.

This is what i did, works good. And you can adjust your chain settings on the WD Hitch and go for a re weight too

This is OK for total Rig weight but really is a useless number to use for calculating your weight set up.

With a CAT Scale you get Tow Vehicle Front [Steer] and TV Rear and Trailer Axles, And total Rig

If you take your truck over first all ready to Camp/tow, [No trailer on]
then do a re weight with the trailer ready to camp,
No WD set tight or chained up
Then do a Third re weight with the rig all set with your WD set for towing
Like Bob did he posted pictures

This will give you a lot of info to plug into a spread sheet or use for toilet paper if you run out no but seriously

you will know your actual TV gross - maybe plus your sidekick and dog [add accordingly - proceed with caution]
You will know your actual Trailer Gross [+/- propane/water load]
you will know how much trailer weight is on the TV rear axle and how much front axle lift you get.
You can calculate your trailer tongue weight
Then with your WD set to where you "Think" it should be you can see how much Weight is being transferred from the rear of the tow vehicle to the trailer Axle and The Front Axle.

Cheers Ultra

Right. But the OP didn't say what he/she needed the info. for, and if they just need to know how much the vehicle weighs, I'm letting them know that there are much easier ways (ha! see what I did there?) than driving all the way to a CAT scale.

Ok I re read the OPs question and you are sort of correct. [emoji16]. He/she asked about a CAT scale and I ran with it LOL, Yes I have got the empty truck weight at a scale at a landfill but like I said it is only "part" of the equation and not helpful in the big picture

Last time I weighed I didn't have a WD hitch.

Weigh #1 I unhooked the trailer and pulled the truck forward on the drive axle scale.

Steer Axle 0lbs
Drive Axle 5240lb (2005 GMC Crew Cab 1500)
Trailer Axle 5080lb (remodeled 2003 Keystone 24FB dry + propane)

Weight #2 I hooked the trailer back up and weighed normally

Steer Axle 2860lb
Trailer Axle 3120lb
Trailer Axle 4520lb

Simple math says that my tongue weight (5080-4520) is 560lb

I just realized that the gross weight differed between readings by 180lbs. Only thing I can think is if I was sitting in the truck on the last weigh?
