Rivian Electric Truck and SUV

We just viewed several YouTubes on the Rivian Electric Trucks. We were very impressed with what we saw. These truck were just introduced at the Los Angeles Auto Show. The have already produced prototypes for road testing.

These vehicles are powered by separate electric motors on each wheel. The electric motors produce 800 horse power and 14,000 Newton Meters of torque. The driving range is up yo 400 miles on a single charge.

Rivian will produce a crew cab pick-up and a seven passenger SUV. The spec the pick-up to have a 1,700# payload and an 11,000# towing capacity. The price range will be between $50,000 and $70,000. Rivian expects to start selling trucks in the second half of 2020.

I have not been so impressed by anything automotive in a very long time. These things could actually tow an Airstream.

A little off but many yrs. ago in Chgo. all delivery trucks in loop were electric [battery] chain drive w/hard tires. they were very powerful. I believe ended in late 40s or 50s.

If you have any interest, watch the YouTubes. They are saying that the towing capacity is 11,000 pounds. Since the pick-up truck and the SUV are on the same chassis, the SUV should have a similar towing capacity.

I just did a little more research on Rivian.com. The pick-up towing capacity is 11,000# and the SUV towing capacity is 7,800# The payload capacities on both vehicles are 1,763#.

The Rivian vehicle are to be produced in Normal, Illinois. Rivian has purchased the former Mitsubishi Production Plant in Normal.

Brian - this is being discussed in another thread (about Tesla’s proposed truck which is unique I guess....).

The Rivian truck looks very promising - 11K towing capacity, 1700# cargo. The SUV loses a lot of towing capacity - not sure why...it looks awesome.

The truck seems to be a viable option for my 6000# 27FB...not sure how the hitch would attach to the frame since the battery is a skateboard frame underneath but very compelling to be sure!!

Has any one any info what would hrs. or miles usage be and speeds before needing charge except post 1 up to 4oo miles per charge? A 300 mile day or more would take a lot of juice esp. towing, Another thing where are recharge stations going to be located. IMO great for local but when on interstates etc. dead in the water if batts. depleated, just can not call serv. and get can of gas, or is it going to be hybrid? Not any of these concerns have been discussed previous posts. Some have researched this new vehicle but no operating specs. posted yet, only towing caps. and load caps. These items stated above are very important just as wght. and tow caps. are.

I thought the same about lack of charging stations in rural areas. SuEllyn's niece in Jacksonville has a Tesla. She and her husband come over here to the beach on a regular basis. That is a 320 mile run which is beyond thier Tesla's range. As it turns out, there are vehicle charging stations all along I-10 in Florida. We also have found out that there are 4 charging station in our rural Panhandle county.

It is an interesting truck but way too ugly to buy. A redesign of the grill is definitely in order.

Rivian sees their unique vertical headlights as a trademark look. At first, I thought the front elevation was not very attractive, but upon closer look, it is starting to grow on me.

If, and this is a really big if, they can really deliver a electric vehicle that will tow my 27 ft FC 400 miles in all conditions, cold and heat and mountains, then it would be on my short list.

My electric bike, which I quite like, promises me a 93 mile range when it's fully charged. 45 miles later, the battery is depleted. I know, apples and oranges, but it's easy to promise stuff.

There is no AND statement for towing capacity and range. The Model X range towing a 22FB is a fraction of what it is without. The laws of physics apply to both, sadly. As I would personally love an ETV.

I know that promises in these situation are not always fulfilled. I am very hopeful that these Rivian people can do it or, at least, come close. It is about time for a viable EV. This is the first EV company to even talk about towing a trailer. The technology is available. The Big Three don't seem to be really serious about doing it.

As far as performance promises fulfilled goes, in the early part of the 20th Century there was a company called the Detroit Elactric Car Company. Detroit Electric claimed an 80 mile range on a sigle charge. A number of independent tests were conducted. One test got 211.3 miles on a single chgarge. Clara Ford (Henry Ford's wife) drove a Detroit Electric into the 1920's. In 1908 she purchased a Detrot Electric Model C Coupe which was equipped with a special child seat for Edsel. She owned several of the vehicles.

I have always had an interest in electric vehicles. I am hopeful that there will soon be an EV that can tow my Airstream.

I agree, Brian. If they can deliver it, I would be quite interested.

We feel good enough about the Rivian that we have already placed a preorder for the R1S and sent in our deposit. Our youngest son, who was ready to buy a Tesla, has done the same.

I would love to see these hit the market and meet the price and performance targets but I suspect this will follow a similar path as the pre-announced $35k Tesla model 3. I put in my $1k deposit and reservation for that but reality is it is around $60k today. I am likely to request my refund soon. Time will tell.

I agree. I'm hoping for the best, but not counting on it. The main thing that gives me some hope for this venture is that Rivian has already purchased and is refitting the former Mitsubishi Plant in Normal, Illinois.

The time for a viable EV has come. Maybe these are the people who can pull it off.
