Purchasing Out of State

Airstream/RV newbie here. Was wondering if anyone had experience purchasing an airstream from a private seller and then transporting it home to a different state. We are purchasing a 31’ Classic in Maryland this Saturday and need to bring it back to PA where we live.

Reading through Maryland’s motor vehicle website, it sound like we need to purchase a temporary tag. Does anyone have experience dealing with all the red tape and jumping through the hoops?

TIA, Ron

I did the exact same thin when I bought a trailer in NC and had to drive it home to Wisconsin.

The process was simple. Took the bill of sale and signed title to the title office along with proof of insurance for my tow vehicle. They charged a few bucks and printed out a temp tag. Not much red tape getting things figured out.

Double check the insurance regulations before you go though, as the folks in NC require that the insurance company issuing the policy on the TV show up on their database as a legitimate company.

Have done it both ways. Getting the temporary tag will require a bill of sale and a trip to the DOT license office to pay the fee. Your home state should adjust when registering. Or you can ask seller to leave plate on and return or destroy when home, if they will trust you.

It's usually pretty simple process and can normally only be done once. You print the temp tag yourself after paying the fee and likely has little or no tape attached untill you tape it ot the back window.

Unless prohibited by Maryland law, maybe you can just leave the Maryland plate on the trailer, and tow it home that way. I will tell you that the last trailer I bought was in Arizona, and I used an existing Texas trailer plate that I had to bring it back.

I brought mine from Colorado to SC. No tags whatsoever. Had no issues with just the bill of sale and old title. I’d worry more about the laws in your state and get out of Maryland quick as possible if it was me. Drive speed limit.

Thanks everybody, I talked to the owner and he’s gonna let me use his Florida plate and overnight it back so I don’t get pulled over by some over zealous Barney Fife in Hicksville, USA.
