ProPride Update

My new to me 25' Globetrotter came with a PPP hitch. The previous owner was very proud of it and gushed about how well it worked and how much it cost. Now let's be clear, he towed across the country a 25' GT with a Jeep Rubicon Diesel, I assume with an enhanced tow package. His goal was to tow to places like MOAB, and then have a vehicle to ride the trails with. But his tow choice is another story. I have a RAM 2500 Diesel and would probably be tempted to tow without any WD hitch if I felt comfortable. But I've read lots of pros about the PPP here and since it's already there, why not?

My experience so far (1 camping trip, 3 hookups and unhoods) is that it is pretty easy to attach. My first hook in my slightly inclined driveway resulted in a large bang when I tried to force the stinger into the hitch (again, very slightly up hill), and the piviot slipped from center causing a large, alarming bang. No obvious damage, so I think all is well. This next hookup I was more careful to center the stinger and raise or lower the trailer to equalize the front to rear difference and was able to pull the pivot in by hand and then engage the lock bars. I had no problems hooking/unhooking at the campsite except I had to back in as far as I wanted, then pull out a bit to get the trailer jack clear of the equalizer bars.

As for the ride, it seems exceptionally smooth with no noticeable sway. It does seem to porpoise a bit on bumpy roads and maybe that's just an indication I need to dial in the equalizer settings. The trailer sits nice and level with the same set up the previous owner had and there is no noticeable sag on the rear of the RAM.

Learning as we go, next trip is a 400 mile trip so hopefully a bit more different type roads. But I like it so far.

When I first got my ProPride hitch I was hooking up at a rally and having difficulty because of uneven terrain. A veteran showed me "how to". The key is to make sure the plane of the receiving box is the same as the stinger.

This veteran showed me a device he made out of wood which is inserted into the box and extends a foot or so from the box. I duplicated his "invention". Just line that up on the same plane by adjusting the lifting jacks on the hitch up or down, adjust the height of the tongue and it goes right in.

I think you will like the ProPride hitch. I do!

Could you share photos of that wooden tool?

The other thing I need to master is figuring out when the tension is off the hitch when disconnecting. Maybe measure the height when hooking up?

It is when you can wiggle the head up and down while applying motion to the side of the head. Real easy when Rocktamers (or the like) are installed. Impart an up and down motion at the end of the tamer rod while raising and lowering the tongue jack, When it is loose and "rattles", you are "floating" between the truck and trailer. Keep the stinger/head lubed with a dry lube to prevent stiction, and you're set.

Hitch'n rods, an 'O' ring, and placing a finger at the arrow, rasising & lowering while feeling for the slack.

ditto the rock tamers wiggle test

One hand on the tongue jack button and one gently wiggling the end of the rock tamers bar does indeed reveal the unloaded sweet spot.

The Levelmate Pro app has a "remember" function that puts the hitch box at the same level as it was when unhitching. Handy. And if you don't run the WD jacks up or down while parked, it should match the angle that was present when unhitching, as well.

I painted the front of the box light gray to make it more visible on the tailgate camera... works very well.

Excessive porpoise could also indicate worn shocks on RAM.

I just hit 1200 miles so I’m really hoping I don’t need shocks already

I have a Hensley which is the precursor to the Propride. You have a great hitch.
As others have said the stinger must be on the same plane/attitude. Once you master this concept hitching is easy and fast. Use a back up camera. My wife or 12 year old daughter standby the hitch and operate the electric jack to go up and down while I back up. Quick and easy.
If your porpoising cinch up the jacks a little more till it feels right. Experiment a bit. Mine will change depending on the load in the bed of the truck.

I'm not the owner of this "pro-tip" but I can certainly provide you with a helpful hint. Glue a tape measure to the side of the whatchamacallit bars. You can accurately dial in your setup and reproduce it every time.
