New Coupler

Anyone have any information on the new coupler that is being added to all Airstreams for 2020? It is mentioned in Airstream's press release:
"Improved hitching coupler to make it easier to connect and disconnect your trailer."

Just curious as to what the improvement is.

It's cheaper?

Since AS buys the frames with the coupler installed, I'd guess it was a change by the supplier.

One hopes that Airstream specifies the coupler. The picture below has what the Airstream website shows for three models as well as two examples of couplers which appear similar, but not identical.

I am not at all impressed with the Airstream coupler. It's quite flimsy and the latch can be difficult to operate. Glad they are looking at a new one.

Totally new design. No direct information but looking at photos of the 2020's on the Colonial site they no longer have the traditional lift tab.

Photos from the 2020 Classic Manual of the new coupler lock. I don't see a way to lock it. My 2020 Classic 33 should be at the dealer next week and I'll try and update.

The Demco latch is lockable.

Actually, the best part of the new coupler, the Bulldog Heavy-Duty Cast Head, is that it projects the tongue longer. Better for added stability, tongue weight, and jackknife clearance.

Most importantly for those with trucks that have tall beds, it give tailgate clearance against the jack. Without using projected drop shanks that do the opposite of increasing stability.

Hate it when the photo isn't rotated correctly but you get the idea
