Need tow

Where should I post the following post?

I have bought a 1970 31' Sovreign in Gold Beach Oregon.
I live in Medford (140miles aprox).

I first attempted to rent a uhaul to pull us home.
Uhaul never showed up.

I then paid a private party to haul it back.
When we hooked the Airstream to to the Dodge Rame Hemi 2500 we had a problem.....

Every time the brakes were touched the airstream brakes on the left side would lock up.

Signalling to turn left caused right turn signal to blink.
Running lights permanently on.

Private party refused to tow me any further than 5 miles down the road.

I am now stuck in Gold Beach with a 31' trailer.

I bought the receiver and the ball hitch all I need now is a vehicle to pull me.

Help me, please! Anyone!

Where should I post?

Greetings Kylie!

Welcome to the Forums and the world of Vintage Airstream ownership!

So sorry to hear about your problems getting your new acquisition home. The issue with the trailer lights and brakes isn't a surprise to those of us who have been around Vintage coaches to any great extent. Prior to about 1990, Airstream tended to utilize wiring schematics for the trailer umbilical cord that were not of the industry standard - - so when one of these coaches is attached to a tow vehicle wired to the modern industry standard all sorts of strange things can happen - - and when the hazards of prior owner modifications is added into the mix, it is uncommon to make a trip home with a newly acquired Vintage Airstream where some rewiring of the trailer to tow vehicle connector isn't required. When you compare the two wiring patterns, it will be clear why the issues were present with the attempted tow. Correcting the Bargman connector wiring may improve your chances of finding an individual whom may be willing/able to assist you with the tow home.

One problem that you would have likely encountered with U-Haul is that their coupler ball would have been the wrong size -- your coach should have a 2 5/16" coupler while the U-Hauls typically have a 2" coupler ball welded to their hitches. Finding a rental tow vehicle is generally a difficult proposition, particularly when dealing with a larger trailer.

Good luck in finding a solution to your predicament!

Kevin

It's not difficult to correct the wiring usually but not something you want to do at the side of the road. They make temp. lighting that are attached by wire to the tow vehicle. A pair of lights on a wire that plug in. Think about it. If you can find them they would resolve the lighting issue. Brakes, of course, are another issue. It would be risky to make the drive without any brakes. Some of us might try it. Not sure if I would though. Especially if in hill country. Maybe should bite the bullet and remove the wheels to inspect and adjust the brakes and check wheel bearings before taking that long a drive.

You might contact Jim at: Power Wagon Transport (260) 804-6695

He is in Albany headed south. Posts on the Power Wagon Forum, but not here. He does haul Airstreams.

Home safe and sound!

My brother brought a Ford Econoline van (which is for sale btw!) over and we towed our airstream from gold beach to Medford with no brakes and NO problems!

WOOT WOOT!
