My post-renovation weight

Recently wrapped up the renovation of my '78 Sovereign and decided to have it weighed at the local CAT Scales location. Here are how the numbers look:

Original dry weight: 4,850 lbs.
New dry weight: 5,762 lbs.

Eastern South Dakota is very pretty with hills, rivers, and trees.

Well, all the original materials/fixtures were plastic or 1/4 inch wood. I went back with 1/2 in ply wood for walls and partitions and Ikea cabinets. I tried to reduce the weight of the cabinets by hollowing out the sides (saw someone else on here do that). I guess that wasn't enough. I thought maybe I added about 400 pounds, but not 1,000. I even went back with a smaller fridge, no oven and a smaller sofa. Oh, and my water tank is about half full, so not technically completely "dry"...but still.

I'm doing the same thing:-) The bed boxes I removed were 1/4" plywood with aluminum wall cletes, and 1/4" mattress boards. I'm using 3/4" veneer core for end panels. I might want to hang a clock or something.

Good luck! Post lots of pics! The good thing about mine is that the weight is still moderate. Meaning: it wasn't like you could tow with a small SUV before and now you need a Ford F-350 Super Duty. I've been pulling it around with my VW Touareg and it has (so far) done really well.

The 4850 number that you used as the original dry weight was from the factory specs. If you had weighed the trailer I suspect the number would have been higher. Dry weight does not include water (fresh or otherwise), propane in the tanks and options such as awnings and air conditioners. I suspect that your work, which is very nice, did increase the overall weight of the trailer, but not as much as you have listed.

Just make sure that the axles can take the extra weight.

Thanks. I worked hard on it. And I'm very pleased. I find myself just sitting in it in awe. Haha. Maybe because it ate 2 full years out of my life!

There should be a plate on each axle tube with the weight rating. My 31' weighs 7500 pounds with tanks empty and I have 4500 pound axles.

My '69 Overland scaled at 5020 lbs before I began my repairs/renovation. I haven't completed it yet, but I expect to gain a couple hundred pounds due to laminate flooring and adding a grey tank.

I will add another vote to the camp that your coach likely started out heavier than the brochure weight. Mine started out heavier than the weight listed for the '69 31' Sovereign!

The published weight on our '83 Excella is 5,400 lb dry. That would be as it came off the assembly line. It had two 2,800 lb axles, unknown down angle. Do the math.

I replaced them with two 3,500 lb Henschens, 32 degree down angle.

It really doesn't take much "stuff" to add 1,000 lbs to a 27' trailer. A couple of hundred pounds of water, some canned goods, dishes, pots, pans, television, folding chairs, it all adds up.

Still not heavy at this weight, not in comparison to current A/S or then-contemporary competitors. My folks '75 28' Silver Streak weighed more than this when empty and had an 8k GVWR.

A pencil-weight compared to many of the SOB's out there at 30+ feet.

Add a few hundred to the "published weight" as others have suggested.

The blog shows a good looking trailer. Maybe you'll run the TV across the scales "empty" (driver + full fuel), and then the rig as a whole as you take off for CA.
