Mileage meter

I haven’t seen a product to bolt on to a wheel on the AS to measure mileage. Everyone seems to be saying that the tires will age out before they wear out, so maybe it’s not a big deal. Thoughts - recs?

Our 2019 Expedition tracks mileage for trailers based on when you have the umbilical plugged in. You can track multiple trailers. I'd think it's a feature on many newer TVs.

There is a hubometer for AS. It is/was a cottage business. I'll see if I can find the link. I have run one for 11 years.

We track mileage too, but I use an Excel spreadsheet. My wife keeps a log of our camping trips in a written journal.

We live in the moment Don't log anything. Go thru our photos in iPhoto occasionally. Tires will be replaced at 5 years or if the tread/sidewalls show wear.

We don't log anything either. The hubometer is strictly for mechanical/maintenance reasons.

We keep a logbook of travel. When we sold our 2017 International we passed it on to the new owner. That way they know the mileage, where it has been, and all service work and modifications. She was most appreciative to have a nice record and vowed to continue the practice. Hope she did. She sent us texts with pictures for the first year of her travels. Nice person.

I also keep a journal not just for the airstream but for life in general for the last 50+ year’s. The truck also has a program that keeps up with the airstream mileage, air pressure, etc.

Not necc true, the tires do wear out, you might not see it until it's too late.

Many folks replace the tires within 5 years, a number of folks sooner than 5 years. Do all, no, but I think a fair majority do.

Tires as they age loose capacity, so with an up to 5 tons of RV on them, an e rated tire that came with the trailer will carry 2830lbs at 80psi or a combined weight of about 11,400lbs. I don't know how much degradation occurs, but deducting weight moved to the TV, it's not a huge window. Of course a lower weight trailer might eek by a bit longer than a heavier trailer.

My rule of thumb (and I do track mileage) is that after 3-4 years replace. Most years I am close to 4 because mine gets stored indoors. I also repack my bearings every year to every other year and inspect the tires at that time. Not related, with never lube, from what I've read here, you want to make sure it's got the antisize grease on the hub regularly and those bearings should be replaced close to 50k miles with tire inspections each time.

Is it overkill? Maybe, but knock on wood, I've never had a blowout or tread separation. I also cover the tires to protect against UV when parked outside.

A recent Consumer Reports had a story about Goodyear tires on motorhomes that had the "Marathon Syndrome" and it results in law suits. One of the problems cited was the tires aged before they wore out, due to the nature intermittent use.

I was surprised to see that the recommendation was to replace tires at 10 years.

Well…that’s Consumer Reports for ya.

Five years. It’s cheap insurance.

Marathons. Replace at your earliest convenience.

This might not help the original poster, but our 2013 Ram 1500 has a third odometer that is activated when tow haul mode is selected so we know how far the trailer has traveled.

I log business miles with the Everlance app on my mobile phone. Logs are by individual business, vehicle, and purpose. It is very accurate. I sometimes forget to turn it on but I get enter a starting point and destination to manually log the miles. Like all GPS/mapping apps, it feasts on the battery. You could log expenses, too.
