We would like to buy an AS to Tour the western US and Canada. We will leave from Ohio. We have a ML 350 all wheel drive with a factory hitch and a 7200# trailer rating. My wife an I alone. WHAT IS THE largest AS we should consider? I am concerned about not having enough “margin” for the car & stores. Thanks in advance for the advice.
The allowable tongue weight varies from year and model. Do you know the max tongue weight or can you describe the year and model more completely? Do you have the factory installed hitch? Depending on the particulars you are looking at somewhere between 23 and 28 as the limit.
Older MLs like mine needed a hitch reinforcement to be used with the weight distribution hitch. You will also need a brake controller. With proper setup you can tow a larger unit. Mine is a 30, but TV is an ML320CDI. But 27' shouldn't be an issue. I highly recommend you see CanAm rv to get it setup right if you're not familiar enough to do it yourself.
