Here we go again Ford

Well, my new Expedition Max, built 9/22 is experiencing the trailer brake issue that my 2021 F150 had. After two visits to dealers with the F150, being told everything was ship-shape. Ford came out with a recall on the trailer brake controller about three months later. According to Ford, the recall was corrected in early 2022. After calling three dealers this morning to get it in for service, the response was there is no recall on my vehicle, and the soonest I can get it in is late December. Anyone looking at a new Ford, check the brake controller.

Did you get a recall letter from Ford?

It may be time to think aftermarket controller, at least you'd know it would work.
Do you know if they have tried it on another trailer?

This the recall?

The response of "maybe we can squeeze you in a month or two from now" seems to be the current line from many vehicle and RV dealers. Whether it's your tow vehicle or your Airstream, a month or two just doesn't get it.

I recently accompanied a friend to the Ford dealer in Fort Walton Beach. He was dropping off his 2021 Explorer off for warranty work. He had waited almost two months for this appointment. One of the warranty issues was that the passenger window was stuck in the open position. During the waiting period for his appointment, he had received a recall notice on another issue.

When he arrived at the dealership, he was told that they would try to fix the window, but the recall could not be handled at that time. He had to make another appointment for the recall which was another three months in the future.

This might explain some of it.

What kind of problem are you having and are you sure it is the controller? My 2022 F250 was build 11/21 and had a brake controller recall right after I bought it in 1/22. It was a simple software update and I got it done while waiting through my local Ford dealer Quick Lane. No issues towing for about 6,000 miles now. I am guessing that your vehicle does not have the recall and was probably updated before you took delivery. You should be able to login to your ford account and check to see if there are any open recalls on your vehicle.

Same problem I had with my 2021 F150. Squeezing the controller engages the brakes, stepping on the brake pedals does not. That was the original decal on 2021 early 2022 f150’s & Expeditions.

Yikes - that does not sound good. Below is the information on the recall they did earlier in the year which applied to mine. I never had any issue but got the firmware update before towing much. I looked up the recall and it does say the problem firmware was taken out of production 2/15/2022 so I can see why it probably does not apply to you.

2022 f-250

Maybe Ford is having a problem with many trailer brake systems. My F250 arrived in February 2022 (7 months after ordered) and in March a third party app notified me the day that the recall for my trailer brake system was released. It was also a software update. Even though I had not yet received a letter, my dealer agreed to perform the update after some research since they had not yet been notified either. Took about an hour and I was able to leave on a two month trip a few days later. Over 15,000 miles of towing and no issues.

Always super irritating when your vehicle is the one having the issues.

Little fun perspective. On the fleet side we had Cummins Rams out of service for 6 plus months with electronics issues. Absolute disasters.

And the Silverado’s engines and transmissions are disasters. Gm warranty service is just awful. Rated as one of the worse vehicles of 2022.

I had a similar problem. When setting stationary the break wheel sensor will not engage the trailer breaks. Once moving the sensor reads and applies voltage to the trailer break.

Are you referring to GM’s problem with the active fuel management system and hydraulic lifter failure?

No. Specifically duramax related. Intermittent issues with them simply not starting. Crank endlessly and don’t start. 15 mins later they’re perfect.

The issues on the gas engine side are well known. Rates as one of the least reliable vehicles for 2021 and 2022 now.

Admittedly I’m biased against gm. Bad product. How many taxpayer bailouts. Awful, poor service attitudes. As a business we buy trucks to do a function. The fanboys will always come back and buy their junk.

We are paying the price for the failure and demise of vocational education. Which I should have wrote a book on after 45 years in the system. The shunning of the trades all trades and the praise and admiration if you chose sales lawyer Doctor has left us with a huge shortage of techs. Now compound that with the parts manufacturing and supply backup and it’s a perfect storm.

I have a in with Techs and Ford but even then with my extended warranty and connections it’s we will fly ya home if this or that breaks on the road. It could be months.

Example my tailgate had the Ford tailgate release recall no parts for that and then one day coming out of storage starting a trip It dropped. Our Airsteam propane tank cover was destroyed and the tank hold downs.

Ford will cover a new tailgate. Yet it’s been two months backordered and no ship date released.

No brand is beyond parts and tech shortage’s Welcome to life after Covid.
