Gas Mileage

Hi All,

Just for your interest ..... I just got back from a 7000KM drive thoughout WA, OR, CA, AZ, UT, ID and BC going up and down over more montain and on more twisty turning roads than I can count, pulling an AS 23' International. We made it over 4 passes varying from 5000' to 8000', from
-8F to +80F all on "byways" and rarely Interstates.

My 2010 Dodge RAM 1500 5.7l engine averaged 14 miles to the gallon....17.9L/100km .

I'm happy with that!

I have a 2001 4.7L Tundra. I consistently get 17 MPG (check every tank). Pulling my 68 Trade Wind I get 12-13.

We have a '06 Honda Ridgeline. Last summer did the mountain states for 3 weeks up to 10,000'. Averaged 16.4mpg, and I'm very happy with that. So much so that we're gonna do it again this summer.

We usually average around 11mpg, but usually are up and down in the Pocono Mountains. We are going on a trip to Florida this summer down I95 -- we should get better mileage -- I will report when we get back.

Permit me to be skeptical.

I find that a realistic MPG for gassers on a typical trip is 8-9 MPG albeit with a 30' classic. This with three different tow vehicles. To a point you can improve MPG by slowing down and higher altitudes help too.

RMB,

Was that 14 miles to a US gallon, or Imperial gallon?

I had the same question: US or Imperial gallons?

I assume US, because he's traveling mostly in the US and presumably being filled there.

If so, that is excellent mileage for a gasoline vehicle.

In the summer of '08 we went to Alaska and back towing a '75 23' with a 1/2 ton GMC, 5.3L gasser, and averaged over the entire trip 12.4 MPG. I saved all the gas receipts and wrote down all the mileage per tank, so I know this was accurate.

Sooo, not to question the great fuel milage, but how many of you out there have actually checked their odometer for accuracy?

We don't worry too much about the fuel delivery systems as they are supposed to be calibrated and checked at least annually by the "fed" or state.

FYI
I recently tried the Fuel Doctor on my wife's SUV. It is a electrical system conditioner. She has filled up three times and is getting a solid 25 extra miles each fill up. She is getting her usual highway millage in town.

This is for cars and trucks over two years old and has a 30 day money back guarantee. I bought mine at Best Buy.

In our Tundra 5.7L 4x4 CrewMax pulling a 27' FB Ocean Breeze, we are getting 11.8 - 12.1 MPG on fairly level freeways between LA and San Clemente. Leaving Friday after work for Morro Bay and will see a few more hills, so I suspect that we will see a drop in our MPG. Will let you know what we average once we get back.

We get 16-18 with our Grand Cherokee Diesel pulling our little 16' Sport. I'm not complaining about that. The Jeep does 24-25 on the highway without pulling and around 20 in town. My overall fuelly.com average is 20.3 after owning it for about a year and a half.

We just drove to Gettysburg, PA from Idaho; almost 4,000 miles. Our mpg has varied depending on speed, terrain and weather from 10.5 to 13. Cost of fuel has ranged from $3.31 (Wyoming) to $4.29 (Michigan). In addition to the AS, I've got two generators and some other items in the bed of the pickup under cover. We get 17 mpg w/o the AS. Anything above 11 mpg is better than budget. Having a great time.

my 94 dakota must be an exception. a few trips between ny and florida the odo matches the gps(s) but the speedo is showing - 4 mph @ 70 mph on the gps. it does seem odd.

1999 Dodge Durango 5.2L lightly modded: 14-15 city, 19 highway @ 65mph/16 highway @ 80, 9-11mpg towing @ 65mph. 4600lbs + 4spd + gasoline = low mileage

This is not necessarily true. Speedos tend to be a little high and odometers are usually pretty close to accurate (with a stock tire size) these days.

I have to agree with Zig. The speedometer and odometer use the same mechanism to compute revolutions of the tire. Mess with the tire size and you will throw both off. I can't see where you can have a speedometer that is wrong but an odometer that is correct.

FWIW, I drive a Tundra with a 5.7 and get between 11 and 12 towing. For me it really makes a difference on the big hills and high winds. Just got back from a 2 hour drive in stiff head winds where I averaged 8 mpg. That wasn't a lot of fun. A few days later the winds switched around and I drove home with a consistent side wind. Got 10.8 then.

I do get 17 on the highway unloaded. If I were pulling a shorter and lighter trailer I could imagine 13 or so.
