Question Ford Trailer Backup Assist

Dear Members,

I have a new 25' International coming in August, and was curious to hear from anyone if they've used the trailer backup assist feature on the F150's with their Airstream. And what they think of it.
Thanks for your thoughts.

Hi

Which F150 do you have?

Why ask?

The "old ones" came with a sticker that goes on the trailer. You mess around with a bunch of measurements and calibration stuff. Finding a location for that sticker that works well was a challenge for most folks ( = we didn't bother with it ).

The "new ones" come with a yaw sensor. You mount a box on the trailer and it plugs into the truck. No stickers, no crazy measurements. It looks (other than the added cable) like an easier setup to get working.

Either way / either one, they both seem to work. The big issue any time you are backing is to be aware of the stuff around you. Neither one helps you spot that post on the blind side of the trailer .....

I thought the yaw sensor was only for 5th wheels. We have a 2020 F350 and it comes with the trailer back up assist , we had it on a 2018 expedition we used before our F350. We used the sticker with an equalizer hitch and it worked well. When we upgraded to the Ford F-350, we also got a ProPride 3P hitch. It doesn’t work with a 3P hitch because of the pivot points on the hitch throw it off when you try to turn.

For now back to plain old “back up” the way it has been done for years.

I’ll look up about the yaw sensor since our truck has that. I’ll report back what I find out.

Looks like the 2021 Ford F-150 with the 12” screen and Sync 4 now uses the Yaw sensor for travel trailers . Looks pretty cool. I believe our 2020 Ford Super Duty only uses the YAW sensor for 5th wheel or gooseneck. I will call Ford and ask them if our YAW sensor would work on a travel trailer and report back.

I've been backing up all sorts go boat, horse, utility and camping trailer;ers for 40 years or so. I finally thought I'd try the backup assist on my very squirrelly kayak trailer. It works great!

However I think it would be a challenge to find proper sticker placement on an Airstream.

I have a 2020 F150 (with stickers) and can tell you due to the location of the propane tank cover you are not able to place the sticker in the location it needs to be placed.

My problem with the sticker location is that the truck cannot see it 100% of the time. The electric jack gets between the truck and the sticker at certain angles and the truck loses its visual contact with the sticker. This usually happens when you absolutely don't want it to.

I love mine. The sticker needs to be a part way under the propane tank cover but that does not interfere with the assist. I just zig-zag easily into my spot!

F250 with backup assist

I have a 2020 F250 with pro trailer backup assist. I was able to get the sticker on the A-frame off my 2021 Classic 30. The sticker needs to be between 7” and 22” from the center of the ball. It just squeaks into the minimum distance. Once the 4 distances are entered into the trailer setup, it works like magic!

Sticker Definitely won't work with 3P hitch - ProPride or Hensley Arrow

When I had my expedition, the sticker system worked well, unless you took a tight turn and the camera would lose the sticker. The Pro-pride hitch will not work with my 2020 Ford F350. It will work backing up in a straight line, but the minute you try and turn and the 3P hitch pivots, it loses the sticker.

We have the 5th wheel package and the YAW sensor, but I am assuming that the YAW sensor only works with 5th Wheel or gooseneck and it says to use the sticker for Travel Trailers.

The 2021 Ford F150 with Sync 4 now uses the YAW sensor and no sticker.

I will call Ford later today and ask them about the YAW with the 2020 Super Duty. But my guess is that won't work for Travel Trailers until they go to the new Sync 4.

I will post what I find

Meant to clarify when I had my Expedition, I was using an Equalizer hitch, not a 3P hitch.

Silverminer, I have the same F150 as you. I did all the measurements than checked them and I love my backup assist. I joke that I am a over 60 (way over) year old Texan and have never backed up a trailer. AND I'm dyslexic. I would never be able to back my rv without my F150. (Sometimes, when no one is around, I practice. Thank God no one is around - hahahahhahaa)

Same here.

Backup assist does not work at all with the ProPride hitched to a 2020 F-150.

It did work with an Equalizer hitched to a 2020 F-150. The back edge of the sticker was hidden under the propane tank cover.

I didn't use it much. It would lose sight of the sticker when backing into my driveway due to an uneven surface across multiple humps. Big trailering mirrors work as well for backing straight. The only time it came in handy was when I backed up a few hundred feet one day.

When I had the Blue Ox I tried it and the sticker would get lost on tight turns. I just gave up using it. Also if you back up at night forget it. The sticker really gets lost then. I have the Propride now and don't use it except for backing up straight. I will be interested to see if the 2021 set up works better, AND if it will work with the Propride. I would think it should.

Does work great for the cargo trailer though.

I have a 2021 F150 PowerBoost with the Max Trailer Tow Package, which includes the back-up assistance. Since taking delivery of our 2021 27' FC mid-March, we have enjoyed 38 nights at 15 different campsites in Colorado, Utah, California and Oregon. I am new to pulling and parking a trailer, and have been very pleased with the features of the F150 - both as a very comfortable and powerful towing vehicle and with backing into various campsites. Aside: I have the Equal-i-zer Sway Control hitch; which I have also been very happy with.

So how does the back up assist work? I assume it works fine from your statement.

Hi

I'll bet they work even when the front of the trailer is covered in mud ...

There are a lot of things that can put the backup assist stuff out of action. Learning how to manage without it is a good idea. Practice is very much part of that learning process ....
