f150 and Airstream 23FBT

Having researched adding a hitch for our two bikes both in the front of the f150 and in the back of the Airstream 23fbt, it seems the best solution would be simply throwing the bikes in the back of the f150 and using a tailgate pad (Thule). Has anyone tried this? Predict problems?

I guess as long as you're sure there is enough clearance to be away from the hitch and not have your bikes get pinched.

But why not get something to mount your bikes in the bed of the truck?

They'd be safer there, and a little bit more out of the elements imo.

I use a Thule Bed Rider fo our two bikes. It clamps across the bed, includes two locking, quick release fork mounts. You do have to remove the front wheels and if using thru axles would need adapters. But reasonably secure, easy to install or remove, no drilling of holes, etc. I occasionally carry a thru axle fat bike and have a special thru axle mount on the rack for it in addition to the QR fork mounts.
