E Bike carry

Trying to carry two E bikes on a 19’ Bambi. Old Fiama can’t support more than 75 lbs. Our 2 bikes weigh approximately 100 lbs. combined. Fiama’s new rack will support the weight, but states not to be used on Bambi’s. (Probably because of only one axle?). Had a receiver hitch installed below rear bumper on trailer, but realize not advised for weight distribution. We tow with an SUV, not a PU. Any suggestions?

They probably say not to be used on a Bambi due to fear of making tongue weight to low and someone not checking tongue weight then suing after a wreck.

We bought a bike rack rated for RV and off road use (yes, it’s a real thing). It had options for fat tire e-bikes, locks, etc.
Super stable and our eBikes are 70-75 lbs. each.

Thanks for photo. Looks just like our set up. Do you do any tongue weight modification to counterbalance the bike rack?

Obviously, owners do what they want with their AS, but that type rack is not supported nor recommended by AS. Only supported rear rack is the Fiamma due to the way it's supported upper and lower portion of the rack, secured to the lower frame on either side of the actual frame and the vertical body supports are secured to the vertical body frame eliminating any "side to side" osculation or movement. Primary issue being osculation or rocking with your bikes with all the weight being transferred to the receiver type hitch shown. Many posts on this topic here.

Welcome by the way!

It seems to me that one is going to get a lot of pressure on those hitches on the rear of an AS with two E bikes. I simply use a front hitch, and put the bikes on the front of the pickup. It’s not been a problem. Just clean off a few bugs. The problem with a FIAMA hitch is that you also have to carry something for when you want to go somewhere while camping. The nice part about having them on front hitch is they are lower to the ground so easier to get on an off.

There’s also a hitch set up where you put the hitch on the tongue. The problem there is getting them up and off the hitch due to the weight of the bikes. With a PU it is easier since you can stand in the bed.

There really are only 5 solutions with an SUV:
1) put them in the camper somehow. (still need a hitch along to go some where while camping.)
2) put them on the rear of the camper.
3) put them on the front of the tow vehicle.
4) put them on the tongue somehow.
5) put them on the roof of the tow vehicle. (still need a hitch if you want to go somewhere while camping)

With a PU I have seen them ride in the back or on top of a hard bed cover.

The biggest issue is the weight. The higher up they are the more difficult to maneuver and lift around.

There really is no “perfect” solution. Just a best solution for you.

We have a Fiamma on our 20FB, and I have carried our road bikes on it; but when we carry our e-bikes, we put them in the bed of the truck.

I’m not so sure I’d want 120 pounds hanging off the back of a 19’ single axle trailer. That weight would directly remove tongue weight by close to that full amount depending on fulcrum point - and I sure as heck wouldn’t have then setting on a bike rack that is cantilevered a foot or three off the back of the camper.

It may not be a current financial option, and it’s not the favored choice of a few that don’t want to drive a pickup truck, but man, the bed of the truck married with a camper really opens up a lot of possibilities for outside adventures - like bikes, grills, inflatable kayaks, SUPS, firewood, solo stoves, etc.

E bikes in containers

I don't know if your ebikes fold or not, but we put them in plastic containers with wheels and put them inside the trailer. Last thing to go in, first thing to come out. We use to keep them in the back of the truck, but it became such a hassle getting them out, we never used them. Putting them in containers inside the trailer means they always come out first thing and we use them all the time!

Don't know how much room is in a bambi as I have a Classic 30. But maybe this can help someone else even if yours wont fit!

no changes were need. i had removed the factory batteries and did an electrical upgrade to a 3KVA multiples and 4 lithium's. Checked the weight on a Cat scale and was good overall.

Front rack on the TV is a solution many use; Also seen a rack that is mounted on the A-frame behind the hitch, but not sure with FES issues if that is supported or not by AS?

Waiting for Fiamma to come up with a solution for Ebikes that are a bit too wide side by side, on the Fiamma- even with the 165lb rack they now have as an option or upgrade kit. We carry one ebole on the rack and one folded inside. Works fine for us between the twin beds in a plastic container with 2 wheels on the end. We also have the wide tire rails installed on the Fiamma. There is no solution yet for the wider bikes side by side, I was told few weeks back but they told me they "are working on it"; hopefully with AS input.
