"Safety" isn't defined except as an allusion.

Profit, however, is never left to chance.

tourneau cover
paddle board
generator maybe
bins of clothes for wifes business
box of tools?
bed liner

all this....a paylaod can be between 1700-2000#...exceeding actual numbers (I believe) on the XD...even if up against the limit...do I really want to tow around the country being at or slightly above payload? probably not is my guess. Think im better off with a 3/4 truck...but not as good MPG, but MPG on an overloaded XD probably isnt great either...ford too expensive, RAM falls apart...dont know much about GMC or Chevy but they are expensive too....
Lots to think about...almost too much.
You are answering the question by yourself. Go for an American HD diesel. The Titan XD has the same payload and towing capacity of the F150 at the price of a F250 Diesel. The new F250 is 50% more power than the Titan. If you go for the Titan it will be emotional.

I know the default answer is "get more truck"

BUT for 40k I can get enough towing power, nav, Bluetooth, camera, heated seats, yatta yatta...the only drawback is the payload on the XD...and it's not flat out undoable...it's questionable I think, whether it's enough. The actual number is 1544lbs.

When you're full timing I'll bet those bells and whistles make things a bit more comfortable and convenient.

Try to get those in an American HD 3/4 and your approaching 55-60k at least.

For comparable pricing at around 40k, an American truck will be a bare bones "work" truck...it will do the job, but for hauling a family around...it leaves much to be desired.

The XD could be the niche truck for what I want to do IF we don't put much in the bed.

As far as being emotional about it, that's my wife's department....

You are not comparing apple to apple. At 40K for the Titan you get it well equipped with a gas engine. At 60K you get a fully loaded 2016 Denali Duramax. Not the same truck.

Well, actually, my Titan XD was $43.3 k out the door with the Cummins diesel and lots of bells and whistles. The cheapest Duramax equipped vehicle anywhere near my zip code was an LT work truck at $52k.

Will my Titan do what the Duramax does? No. But, I don't need it to.
