Me too! I wonder how the old part, which works normally, compares to the new part. Do they look exactly alike?
I tiny bit of up and down free play isn't a big concern to me. Mine was about 1/4" which I thought was excessive. Leave the old shoe in and go camping?
The main thing to me is will the ball in coupler and locked in with the shoe allow you to pick up the rear bumper of your tow vehicle a considerable amount. A tongue jack ought to lift maybe 3000 pounds. The ball in coupler and locked should take this with no problem. If the ball pops out, trouble.

Here they are side by side.
I'll try the bumper lift test with the old one in place.
Thanks David!
PS I'm going to be in your lovely state next month. 😊
The groove does not appear to clear anything.
That is what i thought was the issue too.
Maybe putting some spotting die on the back of the shoe & see if it hits any thing then I'll know for sure.
bumper test this weekend.
I'll be in Vail visiting a lifelong friend.. Flying out. No Caravel in tow.
