Could use some assistance with new TV considerations
I'm considering a new/use TV; a pick up. What is the considered opinion of the forum members on a versatile and reliable pick up TV for a 2019 16' RB Bambi? Current TV is a 2015 Range Rover.
By versatile I mean something that I can use as a daily driver but also as a reliable TV when needed.
Mostly local trips with some moderate hills up and down. But would like to extend my travel envelope a bit and thing that a 1/2 p/u might just be the ticket. Mostly considering used at this point. Have been reading some good things about the F150 Ecoboost engine; torque and horsepower.
Thanks all
Gary

I tow a 27FB with a F150 Ecoboost 3.5. So something like this would be more than adequate, maybe even overkill, for a Bambi 16. Take a look at the Ford Ranger, it might fine with the Bambi and a great daily driver.

TV for 16' Bambi
Ford Ranger. Chevy Colorado, GMC Canyon, newly redesigned Nissan Frontier, Toyota Tacoma plus some of the SUV's out there. Big enough to do thee job but OK to drive everyday.
When looking at any of them make sure that you specify a factory tow package as not all trucks/SUV's are created equal. Properly equipping you choice of tow vehicle with the correct options is absolutely needed to insure it can do the job.
Do your homework. A factory installed brake controller is really nice to have and is sometimes a stand alone option that is not included in the tow package. Towing mirrors are another needed item. Have fun shopping.
Oh, one more thing. You will upgrade to a larger AS sooner than you think. Might be wise to get that properly equipped 1/2 tonner now so you can tow that 23' or even a 25' AS in a couple years. Don't have to buy a new truck that way!

Why not just tow with your RR? That is a small trailer, it will handle it no problem.

Hi
New vs used?
Used vehicle prices are up at crazy levels right now. I would suggest waiting for the market to cool down a bit before buying any used vehicle. New vehicles are in short supply from most manufacturers. That may impact your ability to negotiate a better deal. It also means fewer manufacturer's incentive programs.
I'd use the Range Rover for a while .....

We towed our 2015 23D International Serenity with my 2007 Mercedes ML320 CDI turbo diesel. Due to a re-occurring engine issue at 207,000 miles last year, it was sold. I just replaced it with a 2021 Toyota Land Cruiser which seems to be the perfect tow vehicle for our 23D as all the numbers work (axle ratings and GVW).
Suggest getting the trailer weighed to know the real tongue weight. Then you can search for a tow vehicle that has enough payload for the tongue weight plus folks and stuff in the bed of the truck.

How do you think my new F150 Powerboost, 2K+payload, 12,400 towing do with a 27FB (7600gvw) or 30RB (8800gvw) Globetrotter compared to yours? Trying to order one and really like the 30 layout way better, but would rather have the 27 just for a tad easier maneuvering

You're right, the RR does a fine job towing the Bambi Sport. I was thinking about a vehicle with more payload capacity than the RR that's why I was asking. But availability and prices on used vehicles are kinda crazy right now. Anyway I'm just in the beginning stages of looking and checking features of various kinds of TVs.

Thanks for the info and suggestions. I am doing as you suggest, but I'm finding it difficult to impossible to get the real TV specific info and not just the manufacturers numbers on line. I really, really want to avoid going to a lot and looking at the door stickers for the truth about any given TV candidate. But, it seems that is not realistic.

Dannko, do you already have the truck and the door sticker confirms the 2k+ payload? If it’s a crew cab that’s an awesome payload! You should be 👍
Airlock, agree with Unc Bob. Your Rover should be a very
good option and now is a poor time to buy a truck, even one on a lot. Even worse to buy a home!

Hi
It's never been possible to get *real* numbers on a specific TV online. This isn't just a recent thing. Either you run around looking at door posts or you make a guess about derating the internet numbers. A *lot* depends on trim levels so there really is no single magic amount you can subtract. Vehicles with very few trim options (obviously) will have a lower spread than ones with lots of options.
Also part of this, you very much do *not* want to run right up to the max ratings on the vehicle. Knocking 20% off of the door post numbers is a pretty good idea. If you go by front axle / rear axle numbers, the same idea applies. You probably would not use 20% of the total number. For hitches and receivers, >20% off is a good target.

An SUV is more versatile than a pickup, for most people.
Ford’s Expedition may be worth a look. It has the same (or better) payload capacity as most of the pickups on the dealer’s lot.

We tow our 2021 16' Caravel with my wife's 2020 Ram 1500 5.7 liter. We also have 2 golden retrievers so the large back seat is really appreciated by the dogs. It also has a 1500 lb payload. We live in Colorado so most of our trips are into the mountains and I like the power that the truck has. We can go up any hill at 65 mph (faster if you desire but not for me) or pass easily if necessary. Now the bad news. The gas mileage when towing ranges from 10 - 14 mpg. We towed our old trailer (T@B 400) with a GMC Canyon diesel (7500 lb tow rating). It got better gas mileage but would not do the speed limit up some hills. The turbo also died at 40,000 miles and had to be replaced. This kind of made me prejudice against turbos.

Hi
If you head over to TFL Truck on YouTube, they have an interesting video that gets into an issue they ran into testing the towing ability of an F150. Ford got back to them with a letter about how the limits really work. It seems there are a *lot* of fiddly little details. One of them is the numbers dropping 2% for every thousand feet above sea level ....
My take away was that we probably are running a lot closer to some of these limits than we realize.

Well, that's kinda disappointing. It's always something that seems to get left out of the equation making a informed decision almost impossible.
