Class II vs class III hitch for Bambi 16ft

Towing a 16ft Bambi 3500lb with a 2011 Honda Odyssey. The Canadian folks advise a Class III hitch with 600 lb hitch. The Honda dealer and engineer advise the factory Class II with 300 lb hitch. Any thoughts? Will still add a Husky friction sway control unit.

_Why_ do they recommend the lighter duty hitch?

Looking at how a class 2 hitch for an Odyssey is built, I think I'd only tow a teardrop or utility trailer with it. looks flimsy. etrailer even says "light duty" 2011 Honda Odyssey Trailer Hitch Class II | etrailer.com

Tongue weight of 16' Bambi is 350 pounds. Seems like Class II would be insufficient capacity, and Class III is warranted.

This is one case where I see no downside to the sturdiest hitch you can buy. Bigger IS better when it comes to keeping the two parts of your rig attached!

Class II would be barely adequate. Class III would have a good safety margin.

So, why is there even a question?

Class III, for sure. If given a choice, go bigger. Class II seems barely adequate, if that.

I towed a T@B, 1600lb with class II, 2" ball. A BAMBI 16 @ 3500 lb, 350 tongue wt, 2 5/16" ball, towing with a 2015 Pathfinder= class III hitch! No ifs ands or buts! Your auto dealer may advise on GTW, but, when it comes to. Your tow setup and rig overall....please get your advice from a knowledgable AIRSTREAM man! You're located in Lafayette, Co.. Call Windish RV :303-274-9009. Speak to Len, if you can. He is knowledgable salesman. Or, Doug, in service dept. they will give you the facts! Good luck. Evelyn.
