Carrying motorcycle on an Airstream

One man's solution. Traveled over 10k miles with Vespa on back with NO problems

Not a chance. You either get the new toy hauler or you put them in a pickup bed.

I was part of conversation the on the last major thread about putting things on the back of a non-toy hauler Airstream, so I called Jackson Center, home of Airstream to get the low down.

The technician on the phone said without question or pause, Airstream trailers are not designed for any weight to be attached to the rear end. Doing so will cause frame separation. It is not a matter of if, it's a matter of when.

The guy went on to say anyone doing anything like what is being talked about here "is just asking for trouble".

The new PanAmerican Airstream toy hauler or a pickup are your best options.

That guy with the Vespa is going to have a hell of a repair bill at some point. He may not even see initially the body separating from the frame until it's too late.

Well, I did have to increase the air pressure in the rear air bags before I ventured up to BLM land on the Giha River near Safford Arizona and replave a burnt out headlight.

The in-floor anchors in a PanAmerica will only accommodate one motorcycle but I'd think you could modify it to carry two, if it doesn't cause a weight and balance issue.

We haul our Goldwing in the back of a long bed Ford F-250 (Diesel) with the Airstream behind - tailgate off - USA Ramp attached to the trailer hitch. Great setup.

Well as things progress, hopefully we learn. So, I now have a long bed diesel to carry the motos, along with a crane to get them in and out with great security. It will carry what ever else I need, including a generator, etc. The reason for the crane is apparent only when one realizes that as a woman approaching 67 years old, I simply cannot load motorcycles on and off 4x4 pickup trucks safely by myself. And, I would be damned before asking anyone for help.

Note: It is this crazy attitude which got me across the US on a DL1000 Suzuki last year, 5886 miles.... solo.

Oh, while in Jackson Center recently I saw the new PanAmerica. Sweet! Mmmm...

At the end of the year, or whenever, I will give an update.

What U posted is a MH . MH's are built on truck chassis. The frame rails are C channnel all the way. U can mount a carrier on Motor Homes. Trailers are different they don't have the advantage of C channel all the way. That's why trailers are lite.That's why trailers wiff rear baths get "TAIL DROUP" and others get rear seperation.

MoHos are a totally different beast....you can in fact put things on the back of those.....it's hard to tell from the pic the Vespa is on a MoHo. Eyes aren't what they use to be.

Trailers are the no-no.

looking to haul a Honda Helix 250 scooter behind a 1990 Airstream Motorhome in a carrier that goes into the receiver hitch ... not a trailer ... only ones I have found are only for dirt bikes ... help???

I use Tilt-A-Rack to haul a Vespa around. Only on the back of my F-150, not on the airstream itself. It works great. I think I have the 400 or perhaps 200 version. They have a 600 that can hold a 600 lb bike. Ideally, you want to find a place higher on the vehicle to attach the upper part of the bike to with tension, to minimize the bounce and torque on the receiver.

Be sure to check your tongue weight and torque limits on the receiver to make sure you don't exceed the frame's capacity.
