Brake lights wouldn’t work when hitched to truck
The brake lights for a 1977 Excella would not when hitched and hooked to our 2020 Chevy Trailboss when we went to pick this up 6 hours away

Is the truck too new for the older brake system?

It's not too new. But the older trailer plugs were not wired the same as the modern units.
Some rearranging of the wires in the 7 pin plug may be necessary.
Does Every thing else work correctly?
Tail and marker lights, etc.
