Any Touareg Experts Out There? Argosy Tow Advise.

Hi Everyone - I'm looking for expert advise on how to outfit my rig in the safest way possible. New to towing and RV Living. My wife and I have found an Argosy that we are getting road ready and just got our tow vehicle. Our goal is to hit the road full time next month.

Airstream: 1978 Airstream Argosy 6.0 Meter Minuet
Car: 2016 Volkswagen Touareg V6 Lux

I've found all kinds of threads discussing the best way to outfit the rig but some of them are a bit dated. So wanted to start a new thread and see if there is new information. Is WD out of the question (as per the VW manual), should I just do a sway bar? Do I even need anything? What about a break controller? What do I need to pay attention to when I'm on the road (coolant?).

Would love your help and expertise.

Cheers!

trentlyle, I will not claim to be a Touareg expert but can offer real world experience. Our first Airstream was a 2018 Flying Cloud 23FB. We towed it with a 2016 Touareg TDI and Blue Ox SwayPro WD hitch.

The Touareg is a very capable tow vehicle with 6 piston caliper brakes and short rear overhang. The factory hitch was rated at 770 lbs. max tongue weight and the vehicle’s payload was 1168 lbs. I added a Prodigy P2 brake controller connected to the factory harness under the dash. eTrailer has a video on how to install it if you’re interested. There are some wireless controllers out there now too.

The combination was very stable and we averaged 16 MPG towing. Have you checked out the Touareg, Audi and Porsche thread? Lots of great information there.

Good luck with your new rig and happy camping!
