I am never offended. I own it, they do not. Is our 'camper' the best on the road... it sure is. If I owned an Oliver... it would be the best on the road. If I owned a pop up camper... it would be the best on the road.

Our friends ask about where we are taking our 'trailer'. I call it a camper.

I look at it this way. I would not know one RV or Camper from another at a distance. When an Airstream is within sight... everyone knows it is a... well, whatever. If I need to fix something on our camper... it is just another piece of 'junk'.

Hello Ray. Nice to see you are proud of your Airstream, but enjoy it while you can. It is evident that Airstream is working hard to end the long enjoyed reputation for quality. The units coming out of Jackson Center are overpriced and under built. I wouldn't buy anything newer than a 2013 because of the lack of any kind of reasonable quality control in today's Airstreams. The end result is inevitably the Airstream being inferior to the SOBs. It would be nice to be wrong, but I don't think there is much doubt...

I call our 2007 Airstream Interstate a "Dodge van" (the Mercedes Sprinter was plated by Dodge in those years). Sometimes I call it a camper van if I'm speaking in a context that requires a different adjective.

I bought a "Dodge" logo'd key chain for three bucks at Walmart, and when I check into places, I usually lay my keys on the counter while I'm fishing out money, and the Dodge emblem is visible on the keychain.

It's just another Dodge - move along, nothing special to see here. My whole deal is that I don't want to draw any more attention to the rig than necessary. Nothing good comes from any outward display of material value. Perhaps an ego boost for some folks, but it also attracts crime and opportunism, so the cost-benefit analysis really craters.

For us it is always the "trailer" but to a stranger it is a "travel trailer". It may not look to great with the pattern baldness but I am proud to own it. My neighbor laughs at me because the exterior gets washed before every outing and the interior as soon as we get home.
I rarely use "Airstream" unless I think it is useful to throw into a conversation with someone. "Camper" is a good descriptor of an SOB.

We never got around to naming our 4 year old Scamp 16'. On day one it was referred to as "lil Scamp" and never changed. The new Airstream has yet to be camped in, but is now just "the Bambi" or "the Airstream. I don't know if it will ever get a real name by reviewing our lax history.

I grew up always thinking that a camper with something you put on top of a truck and a trailer was something you pull behind a truck and if your trailer has a motor built into it, it is a motorhome.

In any case, an Airstream is an icon and it is an Airstream. Our airstream is named "Prana"

The words camper and RV are interchangeable.
There are different types of campers.
truck campers
tent trailers
travel trailers
fifth wheels
Class A motorhomes
Class B motorhomes
Class C motorhomes
They're all campers.
They're all RV's
Some people cal a truck cap a camper, even though it has no camping apparatus inside, but only storage.

I refer to mine by her name. "the minibar". Or I'll say Airstream. (Puffing my chest out and smiling proudly of my life and the accomplishments I've made to be successful enough to own an American icon.)

I have two Airstreams the 1990 triple Axle 34' Limited I would like to call "Big Bit" she is in the Teardown stage.
We also have a 2013 FB 23' Flying Cloud I wish to call
"Little Bit" the wife isn't very warm to my idea.
I refer to both of them as the Airstream.

i've noticed that quite a few people incorrectly associate the expression RV
just with large motorhomes. Could be just folks who are not into camping at all though - not sure.

I do know though that often when i have mentioned to people in conversation that we enjoy an RV it seems to be assumed I mean a motorhome.

Like people using the term "album" to only mean vinyl LP records-
An "album" is a collection- in the case of recorded music- a collection of songs- can be on a cassette, a CD, an 8-track tape, an MP3 player, a reel-to-reel tape player, a computer's hard drive...

So what do we call our trailers ?
Well when we only had one we called it 'the Casita'. After all it was a 17' Casita Liberty Deluxe.
Then we added a 13' Casita Patriot Deluxe to the mix.
It this point we had to clarify which one we were talking about so we called them by their length. "What are we taking this time ? The 13 or the 17 ? "
This worked great until we added the Airstream to the fleet.

Then it became the poquito Casita , the Casita and the Casita Grande.

Then life got simpler with the sale of the Casita leaving us with the 13 and the Airstream.

Funny thing, yesterday I was making reservations and stated that it was for a 25' trailer and when they asked does it have slide outs I said "It's an Airstream" Their reply was "Oh Nice" .

Brian.
Colloquialism's are regional. When you talk about an "RV" where we live - obviously your talking about a motorhome (class a or c), van conversion (class b), fifth wheel is a fifth wheel or 5'vr, toyhauler is a toyhauler and a camper is a trailer. It's really so simple
Even the advertising from the dealerships refer to their products this way.

If I said that: imminent death. I would be lucky, if it was quick. I was once reminded..."you gotta sleep sometime". If your life depends on it, you can stay awake for three days. Don't ask how I know this. ''Good lookin'' would be a excellent name. Just in case the wife is around, when calling the trailer's name.

After a movie night with my wife watching Chris Hemsworth play the Norse God "Thor", she looked at me and jokingly said, "We should call the Airstream "Thor". He's big and he's beautiful!" The name has stuck, not just with us but with friends and relatives as well. Also a tongue in cheek reference to "Thor Industries".

It is what it is.

At certain times I’ve said, ‘I didn’t want a trailer, I wanted an Airstream.”
