Better QC Outcome From Custom Order?

Please answer this poll if you had a custom order, rather than from a dealer's inventory.

I ordered my Airstream to be built rather than dealer stock and went down to Jackson Center to see it being built in March of 2017.

We have had zero issues with the Airstream since we took possession in April, 2017 (about 15,000 km and over 300 nights). This made me curious.

Does having a customer's name on the order (and perhaps personal visit to the factory), so that the workers and QC people know who the Airstream is being made for, improve assembly quality?

We ordered our AS Oct. 2018 and received it in April of 2019....we've already been back to have a locker replaced due to a water leak and a major repair to the AS Connected wiring harness causing the leak.

We have to go back AGAIN this July to have the SAME leak repaired as it apparently has not been completely fixed.

While the service center does the best they can, it comes down to luck of the draw.

Some units fare better than others.......

As an FYI, we are heavily invested in ours......we went to see it built....added all the options.....had some custom work done as well.....

So just be ready for anything.......this ISN'T a GM, Ford, other major manufacturer......but they do stand by the units for 3 years.....so make sure when you receive it, you test everything, get out and use it.....expose it to the elements.....if it's a garage queen, you'll pay dearly later if you have to have any kind of shell work done outside of warranty.

Good luck and this forum is a great resource......also keep in mind they monitor the threads and will reach out if the level of issue rises to an outcry of a needed service repair.

Best,
Chris

Better QC Outcome From Custom Order?

Same people, same process, same quality.

That being said we’ve had zero issues with airstream quality on our 2017 30’ international post delivery from colonial airstream. They had a couple small items to address prior to driving off but they took care of those lickety-split.

Dometic AC failed but that has nothing to do with airstream manufacturing processes.

I also had a custom order however you must remember dealers already have units ordered that are in line for production all they do is call in a change order or depending on the custom order install at the dealership, as stated earlier same circus tent just a different ring leader
