Utah offers a one time vintage trailer registration

Not quite an in the news thread, but of interest. SEMA is the lobbying group for after market auto accessory manufacturers

A SEMA-supported bill to create a statutory definition of a “vintage travel trailer” and provide for a one-time $40 registration fee was approved by the Utah Senate and now moves to the governor for his signature and enactment into law. The bill has already been approved by the House of Representatives. Under the bill, vintage travel trailers would also be eligible for a special group license plate and exempted from wheel cover, mudguard, flap or splash apron requirements.

More information is available. For details, contact Steve McDonald at stevem@sema.org.

Steve, this is great news. Since I have titled but not registered my 55FC (its really not roadworthy yet) it would be really nice if this happens. Do any other states have similar programs? Anybody know?

Plates

In Virginia you can get a "permanent trailer" plate for a one time fee with no renewals. Higher initial fee but good as long as you own the trailer. Good deal.

I think that VA did away with the permanent plates about 2 years ago (unfortunately).

I just bought permanent plates for the AS in November 2011. Even got vanity plates. They are permanent plates for any trailer, have them on my car hauler too.

That is great! I was told in 2010 when I bought and registered my Airstream that permanent plates had been done away with because it was costing the state money. Looks like I will have to talk to DMV Monday to get some kind of explanation or at least get my permanent plates.

Great move!

NM offers a lifetime registration for all trailers, including RVs. It was about a hundred when I did it several years ago. However, one problem with it is the life expectancy of the little tag that you glue onto the plate. It's starting to fall apart in the harsh southwest sun. I'm not sure what to do about it.
